OUR VIEW Our View: No benefit from LNG pipeline Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Jan. 14, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Jan. 14, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News The proposed Pacific Connector pipeline that would carry natural gas from Malin to Coos Bay, where it would be liquefied and exported, would bring some benefit to the beleaguered economy of that south coast community. But overall, most of the benefits of the project would go to the private Canadian company that wants to build the line, not to Oregon or to its residents. Backers of the project — again, primarily Coos Bay officials and business leaders — tout the jobs the liquefaction plant would bring. But the pipeline itself would create mostly temporary construction jobs. And most of the permanent ones would be in Coos Bay. The pipeline would generate about $11 million in property tax revenue, $3 million of which would go to Jackson County. Then there is the property acquisition, by eminent domain where necessary, for a 50-foot-wide corridor stretching 232 miles across southwestern Oregon. Eminent domain can be defended as a means to acquire property for a public benefit, such as a highway used by everyone. In this case, it's difficult to see the public benefit in a privately owned pipeline carrying privately owned natural gas to an export facility to be shipped to Asian buyers. That's the final concern: Selling off a natural resource this country now has in abundance because it's more profitable to export it. American industry leaders have said that could hurt American manufacturing and cost American jobs. For all these reasons, we oppose the Pacific Connector Jordan Cove LNG project.
