The Grizzlies just wanted a win on senior night. They got it by halftime. Ashland High junior quarterback Beau Lewis (with ball) dives to the 1-yard line late in the first half of Friday night's 40-22 win over Klamath Union. Lewis scored on the next play, giving Ashland a 27-0 lead. Ashland Daily Tidings/SATSUKI DOI In easily its most complete performance of the season, the Ashland High football team scored on its first four possessions and stormed out to a 34-0 lead en route to a 40-22 non-conference win over Klamath Union, Friday night at Phillips Field. Grizzly junior Beau Lewis completed 13 of 21 passes for 144 yards and four touchdowns and senior Riley MacGraw rushed 11 times for 107 yards as the Grizzlies (3-5) picked up their 19th consecutive win over KU and first victory this season since Sept. 12. "Not only does it feel good to get a win - we haven't been in the win column for a while - but it feels good to do it for the guys that are seniors in their last home game," Grizz coach David Coldiron said. "That felt awesome." And looked awesome. Ashland racked up 328 yards, including 184 on the ground, and bested its previous scoring high of 27 by halftime. The explosion came a week after the Grizzlies were held to 123 yards in an ugly 39-0 loss to South Medford. "Well, we had a quarterback this week, and that helped a lot," said Grizz wideout David Morris, referring to the injury epidemic that cost Ashland three of its four quarterbacks against the Panthers. The offensive revival came fast and furious. Morris out-jumped a KU defender in the corner of the end zone on an eight-yard corner rout to give the Grizzlies their first of six touchdowns with 4:51 left in the first quarter. He finished with a game-high eight catches for 71 yards. Ashland struck again with 13 seconds left in the opening quarter when junior Steve Jorgensen caught a similar fade pass from 13 yards out. Both of Jorgensen's catches went for touchdowns, including a 10-yard grab with 10:53 left in the second that gave Ashland a 20-0 lead. Lewis ran in from a yard out with 3:09 left in the second quarter, and senior Logan Bishop made his fourth and final extra-point to make it 28-0. Klamath scored two touchdowns in three minutes late in the third to get within 34-14 then recovered an onside kick, but turned the ball over on downs at the Ashland 42 just four plays later. It was that kind of night for the Pelicans, who gained just seven first downs despite out-gaining the Grizzlies 365 to 328. "I think they out-hit us, they out-hustled and they dominated the offensive and defensive line of scrimmage in the first half," Klamath coach Wayne Amos said. Junior tailback Sean Anderson and senior wideout Jake Wynn each came through with long touchdown plays for the Pelicans (3-5). Anderson bolted around the left end for a 69-yard scoring run with 38 seconds left in the third and Wynn turned a 15-yard catch into a 73-yard TD with 6:22 left in the game. Anderson had 13 rushes for 126 yards to lead all backs and Wynn finished with three catches for 89 yards. Pelican junior quarterback Daniel Bennett completed 11 of 23 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns, but was picked off twice. KU also hurt itself with nine penalties for 85 yards. MacGraw brought the crowd to its feet with one of the Grizzlies' longest plays from scrimmage in the third quarter. The 5-foot-8, 160-pound back took a pitch left, made a hard cut inside, then showed off his breakaway speed on a 51-yard touchdown run that broke KU's back. The play, which came on a third-and-13 after an Ashland timeout, gave the Grizzlies their biggest lead of the night, 34-0, with 8:39 left in the third quarter. Ashland padded its lead midway through the fourth on a 15-yard pass from Lewis to junior tight end Jeff Skinner. Lewis lofted the ball to the goal line and the 6-foot-2 Skinner did the rest, outjumping 5-foot-6 cornerback Christian Anderson for the touchdown. "We just kept doing things well in all phases of the game," Coldiron said. "That's what we preached and that's what we wanted to get to and finally we got a chance to do it. It's a little late in the season, but we still did it, that's the main thing and we have another game to go. It'll be good to see if we can come back and have that same type of effort and same type of complete game next week." The Grizzlies wrap up Coldiron's first season next Friday at Crater. Ashland (0-5 SOC) will be looking to avoid its first winless Southern Oregon Conference season since 1978. "It all came together," Grizz senior lineman Ian McLean said. "I think we definitely have some confidence." Grizz Notes: Bishop's last two extra points were both blocked. One penalty against Ashland ended up helping the Grizzlies. A false start backed up Ashland five yards just before it lined up for a field goal attempt. Facing too long of a kick as a result, the Grizz coaching staff then decided to go for it. Lewis' fourth-down pass to Jorgensen over the middle was incomplete, but KU was called for pass interference, which gave Ashland an automatic first down. The Grizzlies scored their fourth touchdown five plays later. The Pelicans have not beat the Grizzlies since pulling out an 8-10 victory back on Sept. 14, 1984, in Ashland. Morris and Jorgensen each had an interception.
