University honors our world By Amber Fossen Ashland Daily Tidings Southern Oregon University is putting the world within reach for its campus community. Celebrating the 30th Annual International Week - arranged through the combined forces of the Office of International Programs and the International Student Association - event organizers hope students from all backgrounds will have the opportunity to share their cultures with the surrounding community. Estelle Spike brings "Honoring Today's Woman - A New Tapestry Of Being" to the Southern Oregon University campus. The well-traveled tapestry was displayed as part of SOU's International Week festivities that continue through Friday. Ashland Daily Tidings/AMBER FOSSEN According to Jennifer Yockey, SOU international student advisor, the week-long international celebration is a way for the off-campus community to connect and learn from the diversity of SOU's student population. "We're really looking to let the community of Ashland know there is quite a bit of diversity on this campus," Yockey said. This year's theme is "The World Within Your Reach." International Week kicked off Monday night with French film "Amelie." On Tuesday, festivities erupted with an international parade followed by an international food fair where students had the opportunity to feast on foreign delectables. Students mingling in the Stevenson Union courtyard then witnessed a karate demonstration, which drew nearly 100 students participants. Other activities Tuesday included a slide presentation on "Women Rebuilding Cambodia," and "Create a Global Tapestry," where students could contribute to the making of an international tapestry. Yockey said presentations throughout the week are primarily student driven. "The students really dive in, form committees and get creative in what they want to do," she said. International Week's pinnacle celebration, "The International Show," will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the SOU Music Recital Hall. The extravaganza will feature poetry, song and dance from around the world. The week concludes with a Friday night showing of "No Man's Land," a film from Bosnia. The movie will be shown at 8 p.m. in the Churchill Mulkey Auditorium. For more information on the week's activities, contact Yockey at 552-6336.
