Filled with a dark but rich cast of characters and unforgettable music, this timeless social and political satire is as thought-provoking today as it was at its premiere in Berlin in 1928. The setting is 19th century London, while England awaits the coronation of Queen Victoria. Macheath elopes with Polly Peachum. But the bride in question is the daughter of Jonathan Peachum, the King of the Beggars, while the groom is none other than the infamous Mac the Knife! When Peachum learns of the marriage he is furious, and sets out to make his daughter a widow. A groundbreaking musical which at the time of its writing infuriated Nazis so much that Brecht was driven out of Germany. The powerful thief Macheath is played by Sean Kelly, and John Goodson is Mr. Peachum, the king of the beggars. Direction is by Dennis Smith, set design by Craig Hudson, musical direction by Laurie Hunter, costumes by Deborah Rosenberg, and choreography by Jim Giancarlo. "The Threepenny Opera" opens on SOU's Center Stage Theatre at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 4. The preview performance is Thursday, Feb. 3 at 8 p.m. All evening performances begin at 8 p.m. and are on Fridays and Saturdays through Feb. 19. There is one Thursday evening performance on Feb.17 at 8 p.m. A Matinee is available on Sunday, Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $16 for general admission, $13 for seniors, and $8 for students. Group rates are also available. Tickets can be purchased at the SOU Theatre Arts Box Office located at the Theatre Building on Mountain Avenue on the SOU campus, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and two hours prior to each performance.
