The 5-foot-7 floor general from Minden, Nev. is only the third Raider volleyballer to receive a national weekly honor. She’s also the Cascade Conference and Region I setter of the week. The school’s first five-time CC setter-of-the-week pick and the first-ever eight-time career recipient compiled whopping 15.9-assist and 5.4-dig game averages against the Cavaliers and the Warriors. McCreary has led SOU to 15 consecutive match victories and to the program's best record ever through 26 matches (23-3). The ninth-ranked Raiders are a win away from clinching a third consecutive conference championship. McCreary joins current SOU assistant coach Jamie (Csoros) Rosenthal (Oct. 9, 2000) as an NAIA setter-of-the-week honoree, and she is the first national award recipient since three-time All-American outside hitter Kristina Matchett earned player-of-the-week kudos (Oct. 16, 2001). McCreary is one of three SOU student-athletes who gained conference and/or NAIA regional special honors this week. Sophomore outside hitter Shanna Claflin received league player-of-the-week accolades for the first time, while sophomore tailback Jacobe Krizman is the NAIA Independents player-of-the-week after leading the SOU football team to a 44-29 Homecoming victory over Baker University. Claflin, a 5-foot-10 former Grants Pass High two-sport standout, led SOU with 24 weekend kills, including a 15-kill, three-ace, four-block effort at Concordia. The Raiders (23-3 overall, 15-1 in the league) are a victory away from clinching no worse than a share of a third consecutive conference championship entering Friday’s 7 p.m. home contest against Eastern Oregon. The first Raider gridder to receive an NAIA award since 2003, Krizman accumulated a career-best 148 yards on 22 carries last Saturday and fueled a 35-point SOU second-half explosion with 21- and 36-yard touchdown runs. The six-foot, 190-pound prep record-setter from Hood River Valley High helped Southern snap a 10-game losing streak. Wrestling Senior All-Americans Jimmy Grochowsky and David O’Brien helped the veteran-laden Red team dispatch a freshman-packed Black squad 52-12 in Southern Oregon University’s annual intrasquad dual at McNeal Pavilion on Wednesday night. Sporting new-look red singlets on a brand-new mat, the Red team won 15 of the 19 exhibition bouts, including five major decisions and a match termination. Ranked No. 2 at 165 pounds in the NAIA preseason poll, Grochowsky downed former Crater High standout Cody Ponder, 9-3, while O’Brien, ranked fourth at 174, eased past sophomore Austin Hunsinger, 5-1. Area products Trevor Lofstedt (Roseburg), Jimmy Ulrey (North Medford) and James Mannenbach (Eagle Point) emerged victorious, and senior Rick Story won two bouts for the Red team at 184 pounds. “Jimmy was very polished for a sophomore and Rick looks like he’s ready to make his senior season special,” 11th-year Raider head coach Mike Ritchey said. “Overall, this was a chance for the veterans to work out some kinks while introducing the up-and-comers to Raider wrestling.” Sophomore heavyweight Kyle Simmons defeated both Skylar Massey (5-1) and Taylor Wilkerson (5-2) to account for half the Black team’s output.
