Phillips Field. The Grizzlies (10-0-1, 6-0 SSC) led 3-0 at halftime on goals by Simon Lindsay (15th minute), Rod Ramos (18th) and Terran Ahern (25th), who was called up from the junior varsity to strengthen the lineup as Ashland readies for the playoffs. In the second half, Brendan Golding tallied in the 55th minute and Ricardo Velazquez in the 73rd. Assists for the Grizzlies were by Ramos, Velazquez and Nate Roupp. Girls Soccer At Eagle Point, Molly MacGraw and Elizabeth Edwards each had two goals and Raven Susu-Mago supplied three assists as Ashland cruised to 5-0 Southern Sky win over Eagle Point Saturday. The Grizzlies (8-4, 5-1 SSC) got scores from MacGraw in the third and sixth minutes — the first on a 20-yard shot and the second on a nice header — and one each from Amber Lowey (10th minute) and Edwards (15th) to take a big lead early. Edwards' other goal was in the 43rd minute. Susu-Mago assisted on the first three goals. Kai Yearsley and MacGraw also had assists. Prep water polo At Eugene, the Ashland High boys won five of six matches over the weekend to clinch second place in the final Southern Conference standings. The Grizzlies open the district playoffs next week. The Ashland girls fell short of a playoff berth. For the boys, Corey Thomas scored a team-high 14 goals and Dane Coke added 13. Andrew Cataldo added eight goals and Troy Robinson scored six. Every Ashland player scored at least one goal against Marist. The Grizz girls were led by Faith King, who scored five goals against Cottage Grove. Kristen Frazier added seven in the tournament, while goal keeper Tryna Womack had a season-high 19 blocks against Sheldon. College football At Monmouth, Western Oregon broke open a 7-0 game with 26 second-quarter points and went on to a 53-7 win over Southern Oregon in front of 3,500 Homecoming fans at McArthur Field Saturday. The Wolves improved to 5-2 on the season, while the Raiders dropped to 2-5. It was the second victory of the year for WOU over rival SOU, as the Wolves also won a 38-0 Little Civil War on Sept. 23 in Ashland. Junior quarterback Mark Thorson threw four touchdown passes, and the Western Oregon defense held the Raiders to just 36 yards rushing. The win snapped a two-game losing skid for the Wolves, who had dropped back-to-back close contests to Humboldt State and Central Washington the past two weeks. "We had a very good, physical week of practice," said WOU coach Arne Ferguson. "We applied good pressure today and made life difficult for their quarterback. With the exception of one play, we played an excellent defensive football game today." That one play, a 62-yard toss from Casey Mitchell to Gabe Hatchett, gave the Raiders their only score, and it came with just four seconds left in the first half. That capped a wild second quarter, where the two squads combined for 33. The Wolves led only 7-0 after the first period, thanks to a 51-yard scoring strike from Thorson to Sean Fullerton. But the point barrage began soon after the teams switched ends, when Thorson led the Wolves on an eight-play, 63-yard drive for a score. The junior quarterback found Tyler Knudsen on a 37-yard pass, setting up another Thorson-Knudsen connection for 3 yards for the touchdown. The roof caved in shortly thereafter for the Raiders. Bruce Voges nailed a 43-yard field goal with 5:27 to go before the end of the half, then the Wolves got the ball right back after a Nick Smith interception and 32-yard return brought the ball to the Raider 11-yard line. Thorson found Knudsen again on the very next play for a touchdown to make it 24-0. After three successful rushing plays for losses by the Raiders, Tyler Wilson snuck in and blocked an SOU punt at the goal line. The ball rolled out of the back of the end zone for a safety, making the count 26-0. The Wolves got the ball back and promptly went 56 yards in five plays, with Eliot Vinzant running it in from 6 yards out. After Hatchett's catch and run for SOU, the score was 33-7 at the break. The pace slowed in the second half, although WOU put up 13 more points on the board in the third quarter. Voges kicked two more field goals (36 and 44 yards) and Fullerton caught another TD pass from Thorson, this one for 30 yards. The Wolves added one more score with 10 minutes to go in the game, on a 2-yard run by Wilson. Thorson finished 14 of 24 for 253 yards with no interceptions. Knudsen had seven catches for 92 yards, Fullerton three for 96 yards and Isaiah Smith had three grabs for 76 yards. Vinzant saw his streak of 13 consecutive games rushing for over 100 yards come to an end, as he was held to just 46 yards on 22 carries. Ben Kuenzi came off the bench and rushed for a career-best 93 yards on 11 carries, all in the second half. The Wolves had 476 yards in total offense and held the Raiders to 180. WOU also dominated the time of possession, 36:30 to 23:30. WOU defenders had three interceptions on the afternoon. College cross country Southern Oregon had the top three men's placers to win the team title, and the Raider women were second in the three-team Southern Oregon Invitational at Oak Knoll Golf Course Saturday. Trevor Palmer led the men, winning the 8-kilometer race in 27 minutes, 13.49 seconds. Cameron Kreuz was second in 27:23.37, and Kevin Jeffers was third in 27:36.99 seconds. The three Raiders were the only runners to break 28 minutes. SOU's Leland Fulton (28:57.38 ) and Cameron Barleen (29:08.76) took eighth and ninth, respectively. The Raiders scored 23 points, Oregon Tech 44 points and Warner Pacific 70. For the Raider women, Alicia Jeffers led the way, finishing in second place and crossing the finish of the 5K race at 20:04.59. Ixel Sanchez came in shortly after with a time of 21:04.98, good for fourth place. Katelyn Alley (21:52.59) was eighth, Hadley Roe (22:10.50) was 11th and Rachel Hinze (24:03.60) placed 18th. OIT's Megan Czerny won in 20:00.12. The Owls won with 26 points, and SOU had 31.
