When asked why, specifics are hard to come by, but names like Whitewater, Benghazi and, most recently, the several email debacles come up. A more complete list of the "scandals" includes renting out the Lincoln Bedroom, Travelgate, Clinton Foundation fundraising and the Rose Law Firm records. All of these incidents are reasons to question Hillary Clinton's integrity and honesty, but none of these scandals, despite a great deal of controversy, has resulted in any sanctions, nor civil suits, let alone indictments, although some people say she should be behind bars for her email decisions. It is doubtful we will ever know the truth about these matters, but certainly they raise a question as to Clinton's judgment and honesty. For more information, Google "Hillary's top scandals" and look especially at the Washington Examiner site. Other voters say, "A Trump presidency would be a disaster." If we look at Mr. T's history, his list of "scandals" includes allegations of mafia ties, sexual harassment, discriminatory housing practices, tenant intimidation, antitrust violations, multiple failed business ventures, including four major bankruptcies in which investors lost massive sums. Mr. T's explanation is, "Its just business." USA Today recently reported that Trump has been involved in over 3,500 lawsuits since 1970. The State of New York is currently suing him alleging fraudulent practices in relation to Trump University, and there are two more class action fraud suits in California. For more information, Google "top Trump scandals" and look especially at the Atlantic and National Review sites. Both candidates come with a lot of baggage; however, unlike Trump, Clinton has never been charged with fraud nor had to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines, nor been involved in 3,500 lawsuits. As voters we should not base our decision on the charisma or likeability of a candidate, we should be seeking the most qualified candidate who vows to uphold our values and positions. Here are the candidates' positions on some major issues: CLIMATE CHANGE Clinton: "Climate change is an urgent threat and a defining challenge of our time." "Make the United States the clean energy superpower of the 21st century." Trump: "Global warming is an expensive hoax." "I love coal". IMMIGRATION REFORM Clinton: "Enact comprehensive immigration reform to create a pathway to citizenship, keep families together." Trump: Build a wall between Mexico and the U.S., get Mexico to pay for it, and deport 11 million undocumented residents. DEFENSE Clinton: advocates “choosing the right combination of tools — diplomatic, economic, military, political, legal and cultural — for each situation.” Trump: "I will make our military so big, powerful and strong that no one will mess with us." HEALTH CARE Clinton: "Affordable health care is a basic human right." "Defend the Affordable Care Act and build on it." Trump: "On day one of the Trump administration, we will ask Congress to immediately deliver a full repeal of Obamacare." EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Clinton: J.D. degree from Yale Law School; first lady of Arkansas for 12 years, first lady of U.S. for eight year; twice elected to U.S. Senate, serving on the Budget, Armed Services, Environment, Public Works, Health , Education, Labor, Pensions and Aging committees. Four years as secretary of state. Trump: B..S degree in economics from Wharton School of Finance, very successful businessman with a net worth somewhere between $3 billion and $10 billion, reality TV star, four major bankruptcies. HONESTY Politifact.com rates statements by the candidates as follows: Clinton — out of 202 statements — 50 percent true, 13 percent false, 37 percent half true/mostly false. Trump — out of 149 statements — 8 percent true, 61 percent false, 30 percent half true/mostly false. In November, vote for the most qualified candidate who supports your positions and espouses your values, even if you have to hold your nose to do so. David Lane lives in Ashland.
