--> --> May 2: AHS softball team upends Crater By Chris Miller Ashland Daily Tidings The Ashland High softball team toppled Crater 1-0 for the second time this season in a non-conference game Wednesday at North Mountain Park. The win gives the Grizzlies (12-10) two wins in three tries against the Comets. "That was a nice game," said Grizz head coach Rich Beugli. "We maxed our efforts today." Junior pitcher Megan Beugli put together another strong pitching performance, striking out four Crater batters with no walks in a three-hit shutout. The Comets three-pitcher rotation of Kelsey Anhorn, Jenni Bittle and Janelle Cristofaro surrendered only one hit to the Grizz. As it turned out, one was all Ashland needed. AHS junior Jenna Graven reached first on an error with one out in the first inning. Beugli lined a single to right field, advancing Graven to third. Junior catcher Angela Heine hit a swinging bunt back to Anhorn, who threw Heine out at first. Graven showcased her base-running skills by scoring the winning run on the throw to first. Ashland flexed its defensive muscle in the fourth with an inning-ending double play. After giving up a lead-off single, a fielders choice got the lead runner, leaving Crater with a runner on first with one out. Leann Foster then hit a sharp ground ball to Graven, who fielded it and threw to short to start the 4-6-3 double-play. The Grizzlies travel to Klamath Union Friday for a critical Southern Oregon Conference doubleheader. With four games left in the regular season the Grizzlies (4-6 SOC) are in sixth place, two games behind fourth-place Grants Pass (6-4 SOC).
