A few more than a dozen members of the local Green Party also endorsed a slate of local candidates for the upcoming November elections during its Monday night meeting. Because of confusion between the party and city electoral committee, Morrison was the only mayoral candidate who had a chance to respond to a green party questionnaire. Party members spoke favorably of former councilman Steve Hauck and newcomer Joaquin Saloma, but chose Morrison because he is a "clear thinker and a consensus builder." Russ Silbiger, who is running for Morrison's seat on the council, was the only candidate to speak at the meeting and received the party's unanimous support. Silbiger is opposed by Tom Giordano and Gary Smith. Silbiger, who is best known for his city watchdog column in Sneak Preview, serves on the Ashland Fiber Network Advisory Committee and has served on the city budget committee. Silbiger complained that the council needs to take more of a leadership role, and said he will not bend on pressure to extend the urban growth boundaries. "We have lost hundreds of kids� that is not the sign of a healthy community," Silbiger said. The party voted to endorse democrat Sue Densmore for Jackson County Commissioner. Densmore spearheaded Medford's urban renewal agency. She is running against Jackson County Sheriff and republican Dennis Smith. Cate Hartzell, running for re-election against planning Commissioner Mike Morris, received unanimous endorsement. Activist Jack Hardesty also received unanimous support as he runs for seat one against longtime councilman Don Laws. The party endorses John Statler for Medford City Council, and Wendy Siporen for Talent City Council. The only upcoming ballot measure to receive party endorsement is measure 34, which supports dividing the Tillamook State Forest; half to be set aside for restoration and half to be used for timber production. The party's support was based on Headwaters' support of the measure.
