Real differences exist between GOP, Demos I was amused by Garland Williams' recent letter to the editor, "Media: Cover all parties." It seems to me that we hear quite enough about the crazed doings of "The Donald," "The Body," and others of their ilk. As Williams uses the dismissive title given by Gerry Cavanaugh, "Republicrats," to the two major parties, I assume the two gentlemen agree politically. Few people, worldwide, are flocking to the Socialist banner. Still, the opinion page should be able to put up with unpopular opinions. As a lifelong Democrat, I object to anyone thinking there are no differences between the Republican and Democratic parties. Only middle-class white men could believe that! All of the Republican candidates for president favor the anti-choice position on abortion, for example. Both Democratic candidates themselves favor choice for the woman. Republicans can't wait to get rid of affirmative action. Democrats think there may still be a few cases of inequality out there. The Republican candidates for president heavily favor an expanded use of vouchers in education, which could lead to the demise of public education and fatten the coffers of private, religious schools. Democratic candidates, for the most part, prefer public education, with some exceptions. As whoever our new president turns out to be will probably get to appoint several Supreme Court justices, I believe we should make a careful choice between the two major parties.
