--> --> July 13: Klamath beats Heat By Randy Johnson For the Tidings MEDFORD - If they weren't playing softball at the 9-10-year-old girl's District 6 Tournament in Medford on Friday, Klamath's South Suburban team would be facing criminal charges for theft. The buzz at the tournament before the game centered on Klamath's aggressive base running. True to form, their fast style kept the Ashland Fire off balance until the fifth inning, when Klamath was declared the winner by the 10-run rule, taking Ashland 11-1. With Klamath fastball pitcher Darian Corigsby registering just three strikeouts, the real story was that Ashland batters couldn't hit her effectively and were consistently thrown out at first. Although Fire pitcher Smith Freeman had six strikeouts, once Klamath had runners on, they were unstoppable. There were a few bright spots for the Fire. Olivia Mesco caught a 45-foot fly, which seemed to go straight through the web of her mitt, only to be miraculously trapped between her arm and neck. And in the fifth inning, Chrystina Braught sacrificed in Christina Shulters for Ashland's only run. It was a long, hot week with a long bracket for the Ashland girls and manager John Souza. Said Souza: "They gave me so much more than I even hoped for - they never stopped and never let up." Klamath South Suburban was to play powerful Medford American Saturday morning for the tournament championship. Ashland finished the tournament with two wins and two losses. The Heat opened with a 7-5 win over Ore-Cal on Tuesday, then lost 25-23 to Medford on Wednesday to fall into the loser's bracket. Ashland then downed Phoenix/Talent 13-2 on Friday, earning the date with Klamath. Email your...
