Patty Larkin to perform in Ashland Although Patty Larkin started playing classical music on the piano at age seven and guitar at ten or eleven, she didn't plan on being a musician when she went to college at the University of Oregon. She studied English literature and then got a teaching certificate. But when she was asked what her interests were, she answered music and found herself teaching band to high school kids. The experience made her realize how important music was to her and that led her to move to Boston, where her sister lived. There she enrolled at Berklee College of Music. She's been honing her skills ever since. This year Larkin put out her tenth album, called Red = Luck. Originally pegged as a folk singer, the CD shows a self-assured musician who is not afraid to try new styles, new instrumentation, a wide range of emotion, and some wonderfully mysterious storytelling. The transition from straight storytelling has led to a style more like what she calls, "a soundscape, less literal. Not necessarily less personal but less literal. Character writing." she described it. Always on the lookout for new ideas, she finds herself hunting record stores and listening to new performers, and then finding parts of the things she hears creeping in. "Recently we flited with flirting with the pop idiom. I would call it pop. There was a desire to write in that style. But now I'm back in the weird world - more inside and acoustic." A powerful instrumentalist herself, Larkin recorded the album with musicians Ben Wittman, who played drums and loops, Richard Gates on bass, Marc Shulman on electric guitars and Duke Levine playing electric guitars, mandolin and guitorgan. During her Ashland performance Larkin will be joined by Ben Wittman and Mark Shulman. Larkin will perform in concert at 8 p.m., Saturday, April 12 at the Unitarian Center in Ashland.
