--> --> Rough seas spill logs into ocean ASTORIA (AP) - Officials are warning boaters and beachgoers to be careful after a tug boat hauling logs got caught in rough seas Tuesday and spilled its load into the Pacific Ocean. The mishap happened off the northern Oregon coast, when the boat encountered strong winds and 20-foot swells, Coast Guard officials said. The boat, which was traveling from British Columbia to Eureka, Calif., lost 400 bundles of logs, said Michael Anderson, a Coast Guard spokesman in North Bend. No injuries were reported, but the Coast Guard warned mariners to be careful of the logs. Officials are also concerned that people walking along the ocean could get struck. "We get enough people killed by logs in the surf," said Tom Towslee, a state Parks and Recreation Department spokesman. "They are not things to be messed with." Without its load, the boat returned to Canada. It was hauling logs belonging to Harwood Products of Mendocino County, Calif., Anderson said. A high-wind warning was in effect Tuesday night for the southern Washington and northern Oregon coasts. The National Weather Service said winds of 35 to 45 miles per hour were reported, with gusts to 65 miles per hour at the headlands. Strong winds were expected again Wednesday. Email your...
