--> --> State bans some shellfish harvesting SALEM (AP) - The Oregon Department of Agriculture has closed beaches in northern parts of the state to shellfish harvesting after finding increased levels of paralytic shellfish poisoning in mussels and bay clams. The closure, for recreational and commercial harvesting, stretches from the Columbia River to Oceanside in Tillamook County. Shellfish from the jetties and ocean beaches are affected by toxins in the closed areas. All bays in the affected areas are open except for the jetties at the entrances to the bays. The closure will continue until levels of domoic acid return to normal. Lincoln County also is closed to clam harvesting from Newport to Waldport. Coastal scallops are also affected by the closures. Shellfish contaminated with PSP toxins can cause minor to severe illness, or even death. Symptoms of PSP are predominantly neurological and include tingling, burning, numbness, drowsiness, incoherent speech, and respiratory paralysis. Cooking does not destroy the toxin. Email your...
