Rob Werfel | For the Tidings December 10, 2005 Grizzlies work OT for win Cornelius, Littleton hit clutch treys in overtime By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Kyle Grewal gave Ashland a second chance and the Grizzlies’ seniors didn’t waste it. Grewal missed a free throw that would have won the game in regulation, opening the door for consecutive 3-pointers in overtime by Josh Cornelius and Sam Littleton. Ashland went on to beat the Enver Creek Cougars, 57-51, Friday night in the first-round of the inaugural Ashland Rotary Hoop Classic at Mountain Avenue Gym. “We were fortunate enough to get a win tonight and we’re happy for the kids,” Ashland head coach Rick Cornelius said, “but it was just a lot of fun to see the fans this excited in December and have that kind of game on the floor.” The win advances Ashland (3-0) to Saturday’s tournament championship game against the Port Angeles (Wash.) Rough Riders. Port Angeles beat North Valley (Nev.) in the other semifinal game. Ashland led throughout, but after Cornelius missed the front end of a one-and-one Enver Creek (B.C.) had the ball down by just one with 27 seconds left. Bryan Laserich missed a wide-open 17-foot jumper with about five seconds left, leading to a frantic struggle under the basket, during which three Enver Creek (5-3) shots were either blocked or missed off the front of the rim. Grewal missed on a fourth attempt, but Littleton was called for the foul. With the crowd on its feet, Grewal clanked his first free throw then rimmed in the second. Cornelius put Ashland back on top for good 10 seconds into overtime, swishing a wide open 3-pointer. Littleton rattled home another, his fourth of the game, on Ashland’s next possession to give the Grizzlies a 52-46 lead. Cornelius scored a team-high 17 points, six in overtime, while Littleton added 14 points and six assists. Senior forward Colin Reinstedt added 11 points and three assists. Grewal, a 6-foot-5 senior forward, scored a game-high 24 points, 18 after halftime, and Kujo Jhaj, a 6-foot-2 senior guard, added 14 points. The title tilt is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. “We’re expecting another real good, physical, competitive game,” Cornelius said. “These are the kind of games you want, these are the kind of games you learn from and you grow from, and you kind of mold a group of kids into a team.” Enver Creek (51) — K.
