To encourage students at Ashland High School to ponder the value of being more ethical in their lives, the Rotary Club of Ashland-Lithia Springs has started an essay contest designed to make students think how the Rotary Club's "The 4-Way Test" may affect their social and academic life at AHS. The 4-Way Test is: o Is it the truth? o Is it fair to all concerned? o Will it build goodwill and better friendships? o Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Ron Hulteen, chairman of the Vocational Avenue of Service Committee with the Rotary Club said members felt it was important for AHS students to express how the principles of this test impact their day-to-day lives. This is the first year the Rotary Club has sponsored the essay. "We want to promote, in this day and age, good ethical behavior," he said. "We thought it would be a good idea to encourage students from an young age to think about ethics." The contest is open to all students enrolled at the high school. Awards are $1,000 for first place, $300 for second place, and $200 for third place. The awards will be given at the regular Rotary Club meeting on May 11. Essays will be evaluated by three judges on the quality of writing, including spelling, grammar and sentence structure. Judges will also critique the extent to which the writer has developed a creative, detailed and focused response to the topic. The essays should be no more than 500 words, typed and double-spaced on one side of the page. A cover sheet should be provided that includes the student's name and phone number. The copies of the essay and cover sheet must arrive at the office of Jerry Kenefick, 645 A St., no later than the close of business on April 19.
