In light of recent actions by the Islamic State, including mass killings of people of other religions or sects, beheadings of Americans and conquest of land in Iraq in Syria, what if anything should the U.S. do? Comment By Daily Tidings staff report DailyTidings.com By Daily Tidings staff report Posted Sep. 8, 2014 at 8:13 PM By Daily Tidings staff report Posted Sep. 8, 2014 at 8:13 PM » RELATED CONTENT • Trying to get a handle on panhandling » Social News What’s happened A wave of revolutions in Mid-East countries starting in December 2010 in Tunisia reached Syria in March 2011. Anti-government protests turned into a full-scale civil war. Among those joining the attempt to overthrow the regime of President Bashar Assad were Islamic fighters in a group calling itself the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). ISIS used tactics, including arbitrary slaughter of others also fighting against Assad, so extreme the terrorist organization Al Queda, which was responsible for the attacks on America on Sept. 11, 2001, distanced itself from ISIS, which has since begun calling itself simply The Islamic State. The group has conquered large swaths of Iraq, summarily killed those who would not convert to Islam and beheaded a pair of American journalists held as hostages, saying it did so in response to American bombing raids against Islamic State forces. What’s going on now U.S. air power, in cooperation with Iraqi and Kurdish troops on the gournd, has been used with some success to attempt to stop and roll back the Islamic State takeover of Iraqi territory. President Barack Obama is expected to give an address Wednesday laying out the U.S. plan to try and reverse Islamic State advances. It’s expected that Obama, who presided over the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq in December 2011, will rule out re-commitment of U.S. forces on the ground in Iraq, with the exception of security for embassy staff. One question looming is whether the U.S. will bomb Islamic State forces in Syria, where the regime continues to be backed by Russia. What’s next The U.S. is expected to try to organize a multi-national effort, including other Arab and European countries to contribute military and humanitarian relief in Iraq. “Almost every single county on Earth has a role to play in eliminating the ISIL threat and the evil that it represents,” Secretary of State John Kerry told reporters Monday night, using an acronym for the Islamic State. He said nations around the world are seeking to defeat the militancy with a coalition “built to endure for the months, and perhaps years, to come.” Kerry is meeting with leaders in Saudi Arabia and Jordan to gauge their level of commitment to a growing worldwide coalition that is uniting against the Islamic State. Kerry said nations from Canada to Estonia to Kuwait to Australia have already contributed a mix of assistance. — Compiled from Associated Press reports; questions for Ashlanders asked by and answers taken by John Darling for the Daily Tidings Photos of respondents by John Darling By Daily Tidings staff report DailyTidings.com By Daily Tidings staff report Posted Sep. 8, 2014 at 8:13 PM » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
