Ashland Kiwanis is honoring Dominic Meads and Allayana Darrow as its November and December Students of the Month, respectively. Kiwanis recognizes senior students from AHS each month during the school year.  Dominic has not only challenged himself with AP and honors level courses such as AP Calculus, AP Government, AP English and Spanish 4, but he also will have earned 67 college credits through SOU and RCC. He is a member of the National Honor Society and was also invited to attend RCC’s STEM Academy during this past summer. Dominic has had a passion for track and field since sixth grade. This past year he placed second in the state of Oregon in discus. He also plays varsity basketball and he received the 2015 Scholar Athlete Award at AHS. Dominic was a contestant in the all-male variety show "Mr. Grizz" which humorously helped to raise funds for the Miracle Life Network.  Dominic has been president of the Fishing Club for the past two years. He also volunteered countless hours at the Nature Center’s annual Bear Creek Salmon Festival and at nearby Larson Creek to help move threatened steelhead to a safer location. He has applied to several colleges and universities, but hopes to narrow his choice down to SOU or Claremont. Dominic plans to major in engineering and mathematics. Allayana’s dream of becoming a journalist has had a great start as she has served as Editor-in-Chief of the AHS’s school newspaper for two years. She has consistently chosen some of the toughest AP courses and has been able to maintain a high GPA despite numerous outside activities. She has been a leadership officer for the Model United Nations program, and she has traveled to 15 countries to give her a well-rounded international perspective. Allayana volunteered for two years to be a Fresh Start counselor for AHS freshman to help welcome them into high school life. For her senior project, Allayana is writing a four-page special edition newspaper to promote AHS to prospective and new students. Her community activities include volunteering at the Ashland Public Library helping children select books, and for the Ashland Parks & Recreation Department doing park clean-up and trail restoration. Allayana is also a lifeguard at the local pool during her summers. Allayana has applied to several colleges and universities. She plans to major in journalism, with an emphasis on politics or international news. Dominic and Allayana each received a Student of the Month award certificate and $50 in cash. During the month of May 2016, two of the nine monthly award recipients for the current school year will be further honored with the $1,000 Tommy Laird Kiwanis College scholarship.
