Junior wing RaShawn McAllister scored 11 of his game-high and season-best 19 points during a tone-setting 22-7 first-half run to help the Raiders (4-5) pull off its most lopsided upset of a nationally ranked team in program history. SOU's most complete overall defensive effort of the season limited the two-time defending California Pacific Conference champion Penguins (7-3) to a 36-percent shooting percentage (18 of 50), including a horrid 4-for-15 clip from 3-point range. "We've lost four close games this season and we lost some of our confidence as a result," Raider coach Brian McDermott said. "I think this (outcome) will go a long way in letting our guys know that when we play well both offensively and defensively, we have a chance to be very good." DU led 6-4 in the early moments, but the McAllister-sparked SOU run coupled with a 20-10 rebounding edge and a 13-for-22 shooting efficiency helped create a 37-22 Raider halftime edge. The Penguins held Southern scoreless over four minutes early in the second half to pull within 43-37 with 11:19 remaining, but McAllister ended the drought with a 17-foot jumper, which ignited an 8-0 run. The Raiders then sealed the outcome when Penguin senior forward Marcus Williams, who entered the game with a team-leading 20-point scoring average, was ejected for protesting an offensive foul call with 6:13 left. Williams departed with a 1-for-9 shooting line and five points, and Southern swelled its lead from 19 to 24 on the possession. "The thing that made me the happiest is we matched (DU's) physical play," McDermott said. "(DU) is about as physical of a team in the country at this level, and we didn't allow it to take us out of what we wanted to do offensively." McAllister made five of six shots and all seven free throw attempts in a reserve role. Said McDermott: "RaShawn made big shots at key times in both halves, and it was far and away his best all-around effort of the year." Southern also received a 12-point, 10-rebound, four-block performance from junior All-American forward Shea Washington, and junior post Jeff Williams amassed 12 points, eight boards and canned two 3-pointers. The Raiders finished 23-for-46 from the floor (50 percent) and compiled a 35-22 rebounding edge against the small-but-quick Penguins. Senior All-American swingman David Moore scored 12 and led DU with four rebounds, and senior reserve guard Sam Luong went 5-for-9 overall and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc for 12 points. Southern Oregon, which is now 7-1 at home dating back nearly a year, caps its non-conference schedule Wednesday against Western Oregon. The 7 p.m. tipoff is a rematch of a 56-55 Wolves victory at McNeal Pavilion on Nov. 27. Boys Basketball Derek Grieve scored 22 points and yanked down 11 rebounds as Eagle Point rallied in the second half to beat Phoenix, 61-52, at McNeal Pavilion. Michael Williams added 17 points for Eagle Point, which shot 54 percent from the field. Phoenix senior Justin Krafft helped lead the Pirates to a seven-point halftime lead with 20 points, including three 3-pointers. Nathan Bursk had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Pirates (4-4).
