Anti-war vigil locally will coincide with national activities By Robert Plain Ashland Daily Tidings On March 8, International Women’s Day, females across the planet will be joining together to protest the Iraq war. Two protest locations are planned for Ashland. Some will be on the Plaza from 5 to 7 p.m. A group of Ashland women will be at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. in Washington, D.C., joining with anti-war celebrity Cindy Sheehan and hundreds of other women across the country, to bring the protests to the attention of President George W. Bush. Linda Richards, Jill Mackie and Mori “D” Samuel-Garloff, all Ashland peace activists, have been invited to spend the holiday in the nation’s capital with Sheehan. “To me, this is like winning the grass-roots Nobel Peace Prize,” Richards said of being invited on the expense-paid trip to the capital. “It’s time to start listening to the women of the world. We’re not interested in warfare. We’ve never seen it solve anything.” The Ashland trio will be doing much more than just marching with Sheehan in front of the White House — they will also be engaged in a diplomatic mission of sorts. They plan to meet with at least three congressional delegations to strategize with, and lobby them on, the state of the war in Iraq. Richards, Mackie and Samuel-Garloff have plans to meet with Oregon’s congressional delegation: Rep. Greg Walden and Senators Ron Wyden and Gordon Smith; the “out-of-Iraq” caucus, consisting of legislators from across the country who think it’s time to draw down the troop levels; and, in honor of the day, the congressional women’s caucus. “We’ve been trying to meet with Greg Walden for some time about this,” Samuel-Garloff said. “He’s a very busy man so we’re going to Washington, D.C., to see him. I think it’s going to be amazingly powerful.” Richards added, “We’re going to speak truth to power. It’s time for them to hear us.” Their trip is being funded by Global Exchange, an umbrella organization for many peace and anti-war groups.
