SOU ROUNDUP Raiders stay hot, improve to 5-1 Young's big match helps SOU volleyball team trounce UC Merced By Joe Zavala DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Posted Aug. 30, 2014 @ 9:45 am By Joe Zavala Posted Aug. 30, 2014 @ 9:45 am » Social News Shelby Young had 12 kills, Brookelyn Cole had 27 digs and Lauren McGowne dished out 30 assists as the Southern Oregon University volleyball team ran its record to 5-1 with a straight-set, nonleague victory over University of California Merced on Friday at Merced, Calif. The win was the second of the day for the Raiders, who defeated San Diego Christian in straight sets earlier in the day. Southern Oregon beat UC Merced, 25-23, 25-20, 25-17, and San Diego Christian, 28-26, 25-17, 25-15. Against UC Merced, the two teams were deadlocked 21-all in the first set before the Raiders started to take control on a kill by Young. In the second set, SOU scored three straight points to go up 20-16 and never led by less than three points again. The Raiders hit at a .216 clip against UC Merced, including .261 in the opening set. They also had 10 blocks to UC Merced’s two. Against San Diego Christian, Paulla Pinheiro had 14 kills and 13 digs and three aces, Motade Atanda 13 kids, four digs and two aces and McGowne 28 assists. SOU’s middles dominated the net with 13 blocks to SDC’s five. SDC was on the verge of taking the first set when Pinheiro’s attack error gave the Hawks a 24-21 lead and three set points. Two SDC attack errors sandwiched around a Pinheiro kill allowed the Raiders to tie the score, and seven points later the Raiders completed the comeback on a kill by Atanda. The Raiders wrap up their road trip today with matches against California State-San Marcos (9 a.m.) and William Jessup (5 p.m.).
