- Subscribe - Contact Us - Rate Card - Place an Ad Archives Revels Classifieds Real Estate Guide Weather Subscribe Contact Us January 20, 2005 Powerful 'Force' at Peace House Documentary film series 'A Force More Powerful' shows highlights of nonviolence Staff reports Peace House, a regional nonviolence and peace center, is hosting a three-week discussion and film screening of the "A Force More Powerful" documentary film series on Monday, Jan. 24, Jan. 31 and Feb. 7 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Peace House, 543 S. Mountain Avenue Hour-long screenings of the film will be followed by discussion. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. "A Force More Powerful" explores how nonviolent power overcame oppression and authoritarian rule all over the world through the 20th century. "A Force More Powerful" uses archival footage to present six stories of successful nonviolent movements around the world. Each includes interviews with witnesses, survivors and unsung heroes who contributed to these century-changing events. The film and discussion series will view one hour each week of the three hour documentary. The focus on Monday will be the 1960 Nashville, Tennessee campaign to desegregate the city's downtown business district and Mohandas Gandhi's famous Salt March of 1930 in India. On Jan. 31, the series will examine the consumer boycott campaign against apartheid in the black townships of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa in the mid 1980s and the courage and endurance of Denmark's citizens during the five-year Nazi occupation of World War II. On Feb. 7, the series concludes with the 1980 Gdansk Shipyard strike that won Poles the right to have free trade unions and the national protest days led by Chilean copper miners in 1983 that signaled the start of a nonviolent democratic opposition.
