COLLEGE FOOTBALL Winston considers Ducks sans Ekpre-Olomu Florida St. QB says game plan won't change Comment By Ryan Thorburn The Eugene Register-Guard DailyTidings.com By Ryan Thorburn The Eugene Register-Guard Posted Dec. 29, 2014 @ 11:22 am By Ryan Thorburn The Eugene Register-Guard Posted Dec. 29, 2014 @ 11:22 am » Social News LOS ANGELES — Ifo Ekpre-Olomu will be missed. By Florida State’s offense. During Sunday’s media session at the L.A. Hotel Downtown, Jameis Winston and the Seminoles said they wanted to play Oregon’s defense at full strength. Ekpre-Olomu sustained a season-ending knee injury two weeks ago as the Ducks began on-field preparations for Thursday’s College Football Playoff semifinal. “Honestly, I’m kind of disappointed,” Seminoles wide receiver Rashad Greene said when asked about not having to worry about facing the all-American cornerback. “I never wish anything bad on anyone. Being that he is a senior and something tragic like this happened late in the year like that, I hope nothing but the best for that guy. I hope he has a safe recovery. … “I was looking forward to competing against the best.” There was shock inside the Moshofsky Center when Ekpre-Olomu went down during a non-contact drill. During Sunday’s practice at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., the rest of the players in the secondary continued the drive to get the job done for their fallen leader. “It was hard. He feels like a brother to me,” senior safety Erick Dargan said. “It hurts, but Ifo is a strong individual. He makes sure everybody is not feeling sorry for him because he’s not feeling sorry for himself.” Troy Hill, Oregon’s other starting senior cornerback, said Ekpre-Olomu hopes to be with the team at the Rose Bowl after undergoing successful surgery in the Los Angeles area on Dec. 24. “He said he was going to be out here with us as soon as he can,” Hill said. Winston, the 2013 Heisman Trophy winner, insists Florida State’s game plan won’t change just because redshirt freshman Chris Seisay is starting in Ekpre-Olomu’s place. Senior Dior Mathis and freshman Arrion Springs are also expected to be in the rotation. “Richard Sherman could get out there and line up against us, we wouldn’t throw away from him either,” Winston said, referring to the Seattle Seahawks’ All-Pro cornerback. Greene is Florida State’s all-time leader in receptions (264) and receiving yards (3,771). The 6-foot, 180-pound senior is two touchdown receptions away from tying Peter Warrick’s program record of 31. Even though Greene was an Associated Press All-American second team selection, Winston said his favorite target deserves more of the spotlight. “I’m still mad that he’s not viewed as one of the best receivers in college football. I think he’s so underrated,” Winston said. “Rashad was our leading receiver last year, too. He’s our leading receiver this year. If I didn’t have that guy, I don’t know where I’d be.” Greene has 93 receptions for 1,306 yards and seven touchdowns this season. “I feel as a team we rally around each other,” Hill said. “We understand if one person gets hurt in there, especially a player like Ifo, we’ve got to bring our game to the next level. That helps us out a lot.” Winston has helped defenses out at times this season, throwing 17 interceptions. And yet the Seminoles (13-0) are the only unbeaten team in the FBS and are on a 29-game winning streak. “I have forced a lot of passes this year. It’s a learning thing,” Winston said. “That’s one thing people don’t look at, it’s not about you playing when everything is going good, it’s about reacting when things are going bad, when things are not going your way. “I have tremendous teammates to help me overcome all of the turnovers that I’ve had. It just makes me smile.” Oregon’s defense will also have to deal with tight end Nick O’Leary, who won the Mackey Award with 47 receptions, 614 yards and six touchdowns. The Ducks (12-1) haven’t seen anything like the 6-3, 247-pound senior since their own starting tight end, Pharaoh Brown, was lost to a serious leg injury on Nov. 8. “They don’t have a bunch of big ol’ receivers. They’ve got a bunch of cats that can catch the ball and go,” Oregon defensive coordinator Don Pellum said. “A lot of the plays you might use a tall receiver for, they use the tight end for because he’s athletic, he’s big, he can escape from a linebacker and he’s a lot for a DB to handle.” Senior inside linebacker Derrick Malone will be a primary defender on O’Leary. “He’s a dominant tight end,” Malone said. “So we’ve got to make sure we lock him up. I’ve got to make sure I put up good technique and watch film, but I think it’s going to be a good matchup.” Follow Ryan on Twitter @rgduckfootball . Email [email protected] .
