No chairs. No stands. Just music. They’ll play 13 pieces, 25 minutes’ worth, ranging in scope and style from Baroque and classical to romantic, with a few fiddle licks thrown in as well. They’ll all be performed from memory, a feat that surprised even the organizers of the prestigious New York Youth Orchestral Festival, who chose the Siskiyou Violins group from applicants across the country. The group’s leader, music teacher Faina Podolnaya, was formerly a teacher at a prestigious Russian conservatory whose students have won international competitions and entered top music schools around the world. She fled her home country of Kazakhstan in 1999 to escape persecution. She’s now a private teacher in Ashland who also teaches violin at Southern Oregon University and serves as associate conductor of the Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon. The group was able to afford the trip, which cost each player $1,800, by performing benefit concerts. A parents’ committee also raised more than $20,000 to help offset expenses. Pianist Galina Kristanova, who also emigrated from Kazakhstan, will accompany the violinists. Businesses balk at Hwy. 99 plans Business owners on South Pacific Highway in Medford say the prospect of a median barrier on the highway bodes ill for them. “It’s going to hurt us and John Deere because we have trucks coming in,” said Dennis Trost, one of the owners of Southern Oregon Nursery in Medford. The Medford Parks and Recreation Department tentatively plans to build an access road to its new sports park across the highway from Southern Oregon Nursery, John Deere and Tucker Sno-Cat Corp. According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, maintaining safety may require a raised median in the middle of the highway across from the park entrance, which would mean northbound customers and delivery trucks couldn’t make a left turn into the businesses’ parking lots. John Vial, district manager with the Oregon Department of Transportation, said ODOT, the parks department and nearby businesses are still in negotiation. Meanwhile, plans are moving forward on the four softball fields, a baseball field and the parking lot. Additionally, the Harry & David Baseball Stadium, being built by Batzer Inc., is under construction, despite facing rapidly rising costs. The first game of 2006 is scheduled for mid-March, although that would probably not be in a finished stadium, McDaniel said. Manor plans Hilton near Quail Point The Rogue Valley Manor’s parent company said Monday it has been awarded a “Homewood Suites by Hilton” franchise by Hilton Hotels Corp. The extended-stay, residential-style hotel will be built on Ellendale Drive, adjacent to the Quail Point Golf Course. Unlike the imposing Manor and Skyline Plaza edifices atop Barneburg Hill, the hotel won’t dominate the southeast skyline. The approximately $8 million, four-story, 100-room, all-suite hotel is part of an already approved 1998 master plan by PRS to construct several commercial projects near the new south Medford freeway interchange. The extended stay model — typically three to 10 days — meshes well with the Rogue Valley Manor’s burgeoning population, putting family visitors within three or four blocks of the main campus. It is also positioned well to serve short-term contractors and out-of-town executives at Bear Creek Corp., Asante and PRS.
