Ashland shines Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Feb. 18, 2015 @ 12:01 am Posted Feb. 18, 2015 @ 12:01 am »  Social News Those who are quick to dismiss the Mt. Ashland Ski Area as irrelevant, or worse, as some kind of threat to livability, need only look at last weekend to see what could be. With adequate snow and nice weather, the mountain was swarmed throughout the three-day weekend, with skiers, snowboarders and others jamming the parking lot and beyond, despite the addition of 100 new spaces. The mountain was filled with young, old, male, female, beginners and experts alike. The smiles on their faces told the story. And there's another story to be told — that of the 139 employees, most of whom did not have jobs prior to a propitious storm in early February. Their incomes will stay and be spent locally, many of them in Ashland, creating more jobs. Meanwhile, some of those mountain visitors, from Medford, Grants Pass, Roseburg and beyond, no doubt stopped and spent money in our fair city amid their travels. Mt. Ashland's proposed expansion — modest though it may be — raised a storm of protest in some quarters over concerns about trees being cut and runoff in the Ashland watershed (environmental studies to the contrary notwithstanding). That protest also led to protracted legal battles and expense for the mountain. Despite the good weekend, the ski area is suffering through its second year of little to no snow. The community should consider what it stands to lose if it's gone — jobs, smiles, tourism — and make every effort to offer support in whatever way it can.
