Sports in Brief: South obliterates AHS wrestlers After honoring alumnus and wrestling great Les Gutches, South Medford High hammered Ashland 78-3 in an Southern Oregon Conference dual wrestling meet Thursday night at South Medford High. The Grizzlies (0-5 SOC) forfeited eight of the 14 weights and the Panthers (5-4 overall, 2-3 SOC) recorded pins by Seth Hernandez at 130, Alex Gilmore at 140, Kyle O'Shea at 160, Thom Whiteaker at 171 and Nick Griffin at 215. Ashland's lone win was a 6-2 decision for David Jacobson-Fried at 152. Ashland is on the road Thursday at Crater. Ashland runner wins ski race Reider Peterson of Ashland took first place in his age group (60-to-69) in the first annual Great Nordeen cross country ski race, Saturday at Mount Bachelor. Peterson finished the 37-kilometer race in 1:44.04, well ahead of second-place Dick Hunt (1:45.41) and Raleigh Jensen (1:45.54). The overall men's winner was Justin Wadsworth, a member of the U.S. ski team, who crossed the finish line in 1:14.51. Suzanne King, a three-time Olympian, won the women's race in 1:24.27. The race drew 251 competitors from around the Pacific Northwest. AHS dance team takes second The Ashland High dance team took second place at the six-team Thurston High competition Saturday in Springfield. The Grizzlies, coached by Christina Walker, are made up of 16 girls, 10 of which are taking part in their first year of high school competition. Ashland next will compete in the Feb. 1 Churchill High competition in Eugene, then will prepare for the state meet, held in late March in Portland. The Grizzlies will hold a dance camp fundraiser Jan. 31 for girls in kindergarten through eighth grade. The camp, which will be used to raise funds for the state meet trip, will conclude with a performance that night. For more information, call Walker at 482-5830.
