Raiders blasted by top-ranked Owls KLAMATH FALLS - The Oregon Tech men's basketball team Saturday night lived up to its No. 1 ranking and then some in an 87-57 Cascade Conference rout of the previously streaking Southern Oregon University Raiders at Miles Court. Entering the game on a season-best three-game win streak, Southern Oregon was held to 32 percent shooting (18-for-56), including 1 of 16 from 3-point land, en route to its most lopsided loss of the season. Kevin Baker led five Oregon Tech (17-0 overall, 5-0 CCC) players in double figures with 19 points, while Reed Sorensen was the only Raider in double figures with 10. The loss dropped SOU to 6-11 overall and 2-3 in league play. Todd Matthews had 15 points and eight assists, Alassane Bakayoko notched 14 points and seven rebounds and Matt Johnson scored eight points and pulled down seven boards for the Owls, who hit 9 of 23 from beyond the arc and 33 of 74 overall. Nick Borrevik led SOU on the glass with seven rebounds and T.J. Caughell dished out a team-high three assists, but it wasn't near enough to challenge undefeated OIT. Tech led 50-33 at the half, then outscored the Raiders 37-24 after the break to win going away. The Cascade Conference rivals will meet for the fourth and final time in the regular season Feb. 8 at McNeal Pavilion. Southern's next game is Tuesday at home against Western Baptist. AHS Swimming Phoenix High freshman Kelsey Nelson enjoyed quite a day at the inaugural Rogue Valley Invitational swim meet on Saturday at the Southern Oregon University pool. Nelson set school records in the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley and also had a hand in two relay events - the 200 medley and 400 freestyle - that established all-time Phoenix High girls marks. Not to be outdone, sophomore Justin Heath of the Pirates lowered his own school record in the 200 freestyle and K.C. Cloyd set a record in the 100 breaststroke. The Phoenix boys upset Ashland to win the nine-team event with 261 points compared to 252 for the Grizzlies. On the girls side, Ashland won with 311 points, followed by North Medford with 231 and Phoenix with 178. "Six school records at one meet - that's pretty amazing," Phoenix coach Jim Heath said. "Our kids were really hitting their times and just going for it." Nelson dominated the 200 IM, winning in 2:32.17. She also teamed with Maggie Morefield, Brenna Moran and Kim Chizek to win the 200 medley relay in 2:08.13. Heath won the 200 freestyle in 1:52.32 and came back to win the 500 freestyle in 5:30. The Ashland boys won six of the 11 events but it wasn't enough to overcome the Pirates. Junior Arron Nelson won the 50 and 100 freestyle events, sophomore Travis Bishop captured the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke and soph Geoff Berteau took the 200 IM for the Grizzlies. The Grizz trio remained unbeaten on the season in their specialties. Ashland doesn't hit the pool again until Jan. 24 versus South Medford.
