August 18, 2005 Standing with Cindy Plaza plays host to 300 supporters of mother who lost her son in Iraq war Cindy Sheehan has raised not only the national media’s attention, she has now inspired anti-war activists and peace-loving moms from all over the country. Wednesday night, at 7:30, more than 50,000 people at some 1,600 locations across the United States gathered to stand in solidarity with Sheehan as she camps in Crawford, Texas, trying to hold President Bush accountable for his actions in Iraq. About 300 of these peaceful protesters were here in Ashland on the plaza. This year’s event will again feature a Sunday morning 5K Run & Walk, a Monday play reading at 2 p.m. in the Angus Bowmer Theatre and a 7:30 evening variety show on the Elizabethan Stage/Allen Pavilion. Telling stories “When I tell people that I’m a storyteller, they think it means that I read stories to children, but actually I don’t read anything to anybody,” says Debra Zaslow. The longtime Ashland resident is probably best known for her storytelling at Rogue Valley libraries and schools. She’s received kudos from world-famous children’s book author Jane Yolen, and she was one of 12 storytellers invited to appear at the Exchange Place at the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesboro, Tenn.
