ASHLAND HIGH SCHOOL Ashland, Scenic win Brain Bowl competitions Winners go on to National Brain Bowl competitions Comment By Local report DailyTidings.com By Local report Posted Apr. 28, 2015 at 5:50 PM By Local report Posted Apr. 28, 2015 at 5:50 PM » Social News Ashland High School and Scenic Middle School emerged as champions of the 38th annual Southern Oregon Brain Bowl Championship, held Sunday at the Southern Oregon Public Television studios in Medford. The Ashland Grizzlies remained undefeated to win the 2015 Varsity Brain Bowl Championship, defeating St. Mary's High School 39-25. In the semi-finals, Ashland defeated North Medford High School 42-28 and St. Mary's defeated Cascade Christian 52-38. Ashland team members are Ethan Carrier, Gray Lunn, Stefan Schink, Scott Gordon and Lhiam Howard. They are coached by Matthew McKinnon. Members of the St. Mary's team, coached by Vincent Comerchero, are Hailey Ordal, Scott Richter, Joe Hagy, Josh Martin, Thomas Cox, Ayani Mikasi, Matt Newton, Miklos Bowling, Mitch Moczygemb, Alex Hoppe, Roman Bobek, Calder Hall, Sean Keating and Summer Keating.  The Scenic Middle School Spartans from Central Point overcame St. Mary’s in their 49-29 win. Coached by Matt Deschamps, the Scenic team consists of Andy Croft, Grady Baymiller, Chris Hervey, Dylan Kerr, Sebastian Vaughn, Joshua Hearn, Cole Ryerson, Emily Roeder, Monty Klassen, Parker Layton, James Noble and Skyler Allen.  Team members for St. Mary’s, coached by Kevin Keating, are Sophie Ciurlik-Rittenbaum, Sam Guyer, Sean Hicks, Lucas Hill, Sean Keating, Sean Milligan, Leah Sternenberg and Kristian Walker The competition is similar to the television series, “Jeopardy.” Scenic Middle School and Ashland High School have both earned the right to represent Southern Oregon in this summer’s National Brain Bowl competitions. Southern Oregon Brain Bowl is a partnership between Southern Oregon University's Pre-College Youth Programs, Lithia 4 Kids, Harry & David and Southern Oregon Public Television, which broadcasts the finals of Brain Bowl. More than 450 students participate each year, with the competition open to students attending all public and private schools in the region.
