The calendar is packed with choir, band and orchestra concerts and a talent show. Ashland Middle School bands and orchestras are slated to give the first performances on the brimming schedule, with concerts Thursday, Dec. 11. The 6th grade orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. at the Ashland Middle School on at Walker and East Main Streets. The two middle school bands will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the middle school's large gym. Almost 100 kids play in the middle school bands. The Talent Show will be Friday evening at 6 p.m. at the Mountain Avenue Theater. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students. The Ashland High School Bands Concert Tuesday evening is free and open to the public. Both the beginning and advanced Jazz bands will play. The symphonic band will also perform. The high school bands have been going full force since the beginning of school. The bands marched at every home football game this season. As soon as the football season ended they moved into the concert season and began working on the pieces that they will be performing. "We really have had to work hard all year, especially switching from marching to concert season," said band director Vickie Jorgenson. "We have not had a lot of time to work on these new pieces." Ashland Orchestra's Thursday night concert is also free and open to the public. The orchestra has been focusing on American music and will play several pieces by various American composers. Orchestra teacher Gerry Pare chose for the orchestra to focus on American music since the music department is taking a ten day trip at the end of the school year to Ashland's sister city Guanajuato, Mexico. The trip is a cultural exchange and Pare wanted the orchestra to explore their own culture during the year leading up to the trip. Wrapping up the musical calendar is the high school choirs' annual Songs and Sweets concerts. The concerts will be held Wednesday and Thursday in the AHS music room at 7:30. This year's theme for the concert is "An American Holiday." At the Songs and Sweets concerts the more than 80 choir students will be singing many pieces by American composers and arrangers. They will also be serving hot beverages and desserts. Tickets for the Songs and Sweets concert are a suggested $4 donation and can be purchased from choir students or by calling the AHS choir office. The money raised will go students raising money for the Guanajuato cultural exchange.
