--> --> May 20: Voget, Clark heading to state By Chris Miller Ashland Daily Tidings The Ashland High track and field team will send two athletes to the state meet this week in Eugene: Cameron Voget and Kendall Clark. Voget came into Saturday's javelin competition at the Southern Oregon Conference district meet ranked No. 1 in the conference, and did not disappoint. The Grizz senior won the event by more than 10 feet over second-place finisher Tom Martin of Grants Pass. As a team, both the Grizzly boys and girls finished last in the conference. On the boys side, Klamath Union took first place by one point over South Medford (119-118), stopping an all-South sweep. For the girls, South Medford won by a comfortable margin (159-135.5) over second-place Roseburg. Voget's winning throw was 197-5 to Martin's 184-7. Manny Algeria of North Medford took third place with a toss of 178-5. Grizz track and field coach Bob Julian Jr. thinks Voget has a chance to win the state title. "He has the No. 2 throw going in," Julian said. "So he will be a contender. The conditions (in districts) were horrible, there was a side wind. He might unleash one up in state." Tommy Skipper from Sandy has the No. 1 heave going into the state meet. Clark took second in the girls 800 meter event with a time of 2:25.54, behind South Medford's Noi Hilgendorf, who clocked a 2:23.94. Julian said Clark was not expected to finish so high in the 800, since the 1,500 is her stronger event. Only the top two finishers make the state meet in each event. "Kendall was in the 1,500, (finishing third) and it is really hard to come back and run a strong 800," Julian said. "I didn't really expect her to make it in the 800, it was kind of a shocker. She had some frustration about the 1,500 so this gave her something to run for." Rihana Patterson was considered to be the Grizzlies' best chance to make state in the 800, according to Julian. Patterson had a disappointing fourth-place finish with a time of 2:27.61. "That was the interesting thing about the 800," Julian said. "Kendall had the No. 10 time going in. Rihana was ranked highly but she got sick the day before districts. She got a really bad cold." Julian said he was not too disappointed with his young team's effort. "I personally had a goal of getting two distance runners up there," Julian said. "We thought we had a chance to get Erika (Boehnke) up there in the high jump, Kendall in the 1,500 and Rihana in the 800, but that's OK. "A lot of our kids ran really well. In the 800, 1,500, and 3,000 only (Klamath Union) had more points than us." The Grizz had six other athletes place on Day 2 of the meet. Garrett Steinbroner finished in seventh place in the 400 with a time of 54 flat. In the 800, the Grizz had two placers - fourth-place Jeff Olsen (1:58.37) and eighth-place Nate Hoxmeier (2:09.89). In the 1,500, David Richardson took home fourth place with a time of 4:11.76. The Grizz boys also picked up a sixth-place in both the 400-meter and 1,600-meter relays. Besides Clark and Patterson, two other Grizz girls placed in their respective events. In the high jump, Boehnke took fifth with a jump of 4-10. Boehnke also placed fifth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.84. In the 100, Ashley Black took eighth, finishing in 13.81 seconds. The Grizz girls came in eighth in the 1,600 relay in 4:34.04. Julian expects his team to improve on this year's performance. He will lose only one state competitor to graduation, Voget, and will add some new talent. "We have some good kids coming up from the eighth grade," Julian said. "Kendall's sister, Hanna, is really good. Most of the people that scored points for us are underclassman. We will be improved next year. "The only way we can go is up." AHS Tennis At Portland, Grizz junior Ari Zaslow rebounded from his first-round loss to win his first three consolation matches at the Class 4A state meet before falling 6-3, 7-5 Saturday in the consolation final to Wilson's Erik Pickard. The Grizz boys finished in a three-way tie for eighth place with six points, while the AHS girls finished in a nine-way tie for 17th with two points. AHS Softball Junior pitcher Megan Beugli and junior infielder Jenna Graven were voted to the second-team all-Southern Oregon Conference all-star team Sunday. Other Grizzlies honored by SOC coaches included honorable mention selections Catherine Clason, a senior infielder, and Hanna Elliot, a junior outfielder. North Medford junior pitcher Keri Sevano picked up the Player of the Year award, and North's Larry Binney was named Coach of the Year. The junior-dominated Grizzlies missed a state playoff berth by two games, but will have nearly the entire team returning for 2003. Email your...
