According to Capt. Richard Scowden of Jackson County Fire District No. 5, the accident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. The cow had gotten loose from its enclosure and wandered on to the freeway, where it was struck by the tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer, carrying a full load of dog food, then overturned, injuring the driver. He was transported to a Medford hospital by Mercy Flight Flights. Traffic was restricted to one lane into the mid-morning hours as the cow was removed from the road and the tractor trailer was emptied of its load and cleared. The diesel fuel in the truck was the immediate concern for fire and rescue personnel, Scowden said. That turned out to be less of a problem as the truck's tank was nearly empty. Oregon State Police on the scene said, according to Scowden, that the high cost of diesel fuel in California is forcing drivers to come into Oregon to fill their tanks. He said OSP reported a couple of instances where trucks have run out of gas while attempting to get to a truck stop in Southern Oregon.
