Techtoberfest event was a rousing success ... ART Ashland artist explores playful side of clay Comment By Vickie Aldous For the Tidings DailyTidings.com By Vickie Aldous For the Tidings Posted Sep. 14, 2015 at 2:00 AM Updated Sep 14, 2015 at 10:27 AM By Vickie Aldous For the Tidings Posted Sep. 14, 2015 at 2:00 AM Updated Sep 14, 2015 at 10:27 AM » Social News When Ashland artist Julia Janeway saw a photo of a baby owl face-to-face with a sheriff's deputy, she knew the tiny ball of feathers would be the inspiration for her next piece of clay art. "He was standing there so upright with a fierce expression on his face," she says. "I loved his expression so much." The owlet became a viral hit after a Colorado sheriff's office posted photos and a video online of a bent-over deputy making sure the bird made it safely off a road. Janeway created a vivid yellow, green, black and white clay wall hanging featuring the owlet next to a box of donuts. That mixture of vibrant colors with a dose of humor repeats itself in many of the pieces she is displaying through September at Hanson Howard Gallery, at 89 Oak St. in downtown Ashland. In a pair of ceramic pieces that could work either as platters or wall hangings, Janeway depicts black and white chickens with bright red combs. Laundry lines strung with underwear in the background add playfulness as well as strong diagonals to the pieces. Janeway's bold style is inspired by woodcut and lithograph print illustrations. Borrowing from those traditions creates the added impression that there are stories behind each of the pieces. While her work is playful and vibrant, Janeway says working with clay is a painstaking process that can sometimes meet with disaster. She can work for hours painting and carving a piece in her rural Ashland studio, ease it through its first kiln firing, glaze it, fire it again — then open the kiln to find a ruinous crack or glazes that have run together or faded. "You never know what you'll get when you open the kiln. Something can always go wrong at the last minute," she says. "But when things go right, it's so wonderful. It's like Christmas. It's like opening up a present when you open the kiln." For the first time, Janeway is also exhibiting monoprints at Hanson Howard Gallery that she created in the studio of a friend, master Ashland printmaker Denise Kester. Her experiments with printmaking yielded images that found their way back into her clay art, as with a whimsical clay platter of a diminutive owl amid stacks of tea cups. For people who want to see more of Janeway's art after the Hanson Howard Gallery exhibit closes, she is taking part in the annual Ashland Open Studio Tour on Oct. 10-11. She'll do a demonstration of her techniques at noon on Oct. 11 at her studio, 2000 Ashland Mine Road. Janeway, Kester and several other artists are teaming up for a Denise Kester and Friends Studio Sale Nov. 14-15 at Kester's studio, 440 Helman St., Ashland. Janeway also will show her art at the mammoth 40th annual Clayfolk Show and Sale Nov. 20-22 in Medford. More details about that event will be released closer to the show. Hanson Howard Gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For more information, call 541-488-2562 or visit hansonhowardgallery.com .
