Letters: No time for apathy, America Dear Editors: I urge Americans to start proving they are intelligent, articulate, determined to fight for our country. Choose your issue. Choose personal liberties, schools for our children; care for our poor, our elderly, our disabled; clean air, clean water; preservation of our wild areas. And then write, call, e-mail. This is not the time for apathy. Virginia C. Lemon Ashland *** Handwriting is on the wall Headlines in the Medford Mail Tribune, dated July 26, included, "Could the doors close at the Dom?" Is this another move by the Bush administration against veterans? It is a question that begs for an answer. Recently after an outcry by veterans, the government pulled back from a $35 billion cut in military veteran's benefits. The "Dom" has serviced veterans for many years with the current 550 residents, 8,500 out patients and last but not least, provided badly needed employment for 450 Rogue Valley residents. Although the government is calling talk of closure premature, the handwriting is showing up on the wall. A public hearing is scheduled for Sept. 29, time and location to be determined. All veterans and friends of veterans need to be at that meeting and protest any thought of closing this great facility. The Dom is critical to veteran's care in Southern Oregon and northern California. Honor our veterans who give their lives and bodies to defend our nation all over the world. Our veterans are depending on us. Show up Sept. 29 and bring a friend. Harry Detwiler Ashland *** Notes on the indie film festival Dear Editor, We wish to thank the Ashland Daily Tidings for its excellent coverage of the Ashland Independent Film Festival and its recent article on the resignation of our Festival Administrator and Board President, Ron Hulteen. At the same time, the article didn't adequately reflect the extreme gratitude the Festival owes to Ron and the extraordinary contributions of his wife, Noreen, without whom the incredible success of the 2003 Festival would have been impossible. As the Ashland Independent Film Festival administrative team grows and changes, we thank Ron and Noreen for setting such a high standard. We save our greatest thanks for the community of the Rogue Valley, who have adopted our independent Festival and to the filmmakers who graced our town with their films and (in many cases) themselves. The best is yet to come. Sincerely, Jane Sage, Bill Baine, Cal Kennedy, Kristos, Sylvia Medeiros, Tamara Mohlman Board of Directors Ashland Independent Film Festival *** LINKS: DAILY TIDINGS: Main | News | Sports | Obituaries | Opinion | Columnists | AP News | Subscribe | Archives | Weather | Classifieds | Contact Us | Privacy REVELS: Main | Calendar | Dining | Movies | T.V.
