--> --> Nov. 21: Ten Grizz soccer players named all-stars By Chris Miller Ashland Daily Tidings Ten Ashland High soccer players - eight boys, two girls - were selected to the 2002 Southern Oregon Conference all-star list, released earlier this week. Although the boys playoff run was cut short in an shootout loss to Cleveland, the team still had eight players nominated to all-star status. Seniors Alex Christlieb as a defender and Matt Sharp as a midfielder made the boys first-team all-SOC list. Both Grizz stars were chosen unanimously by the panel of SOC coaches. "That's the difference between the seniors and the rest of the team," head coach Eisa Tiaa Toutou said about the unanimous selection of two of his seniors. Senior midfielder Fletcher Beaudoin was a second-team selection, as were seniors Luis Paredes Alvardo and Trevor Peterson. Freshman Rick Ferguson, junior Fabian Garcia-Flores and sophomore Tony Laughlin each garnered honorable mention honors. Jose Garcia-Flores did not make any of the teams, a point that irked Toutou. "Jose didn't make it, it's got to make you wonder what the coaches were thinking. But I am pleased with the progress we made, especially with the seniors," Toutou said. The Grizz boys finished the season with an 8-4 record, including two shootout losses. One loss to Crater at home went into a single-elimination shootout after 80 minutes of regulation play, two 10 minute overtimes and a regular five-man shootout. The Grizz will lose many starters to graduation this spring. Tiaa Toutou said he already has a game set up to test his up and coming players. "We are going to hold a fun game this Saturday for the young players to take on the seniors - to see where they are," he said. Much to the dismay of their coach Eric Wolff, the girls only received two picks to the all-star team. Sophomore defender Laura Newton made the second-team list and junior Danya Rose-Merkle got an honorable mention nod as a forward. "The selection process was kind of sad," Wolff said. "They (the other coaches) made a big deal about someone from Ashland finally coming, then we didn't get any respect. I don't understand why we didn't get any respect from the league. We didn't score that many goals, but it would have been nice to get more out of the coaches." The girls finished off the year by just missing the playoffs. They ended with a record of 5-5-2, going out on a winning note with a 2-1 road victory over Eagle Point. The Medford schools had the Grizzlies' number this year, sweeping Ashland by a 7-1 South margin and a 4-0 North win. The girls were also blanked by Crater 4-0, but managed a couple big wins, most notably beating Roseburg on the road 2-0. Email your...
