Lucien Moon Patchell, of the 2700 block of Canterbury Lane, was scheduled to be arraigned in the Jackson County Circuit Court at 1:30 p.m. today on second-degree robbery charges for the Aug. 11 holdup of US Bank in Ashland. The charge, a Measure 11 crime, carries a $1 million bail and a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years, 10 months if convicted. Patchell has been lodged in the Jackson County Jail since Aug. 14, when Medford police picked him up after what they said was a botched attempt to rob a Purple Parrot restaurant at the Medford Center. MPD officers have also connected him to the Aug. 9 robbery of the Minute Market on South Oakdale Avenue in Medford. In that incident, police say Patchell told an employee he had a gun in his pants and left with an undisclosed amount of money. The robber fled on foot, dropping most of the cash at the scene. A Jackson County grand jury indicted Patchell on Tuesday morning after Ashland police detectives connected him to the afternoon robbery of the bank on North Second Street. APD detective Brent Jensen declined to explain how detectives fingered Patchell for the Ashland robbery. Police allege that he was the man who entered US Bank, handed a note that demanded cash to a teller and told bank employees and customers he had a gun, although no weapon was ever seen. The robber left on foot with an undisclosed amount of money. A manhunt in downtown Ashland and the Railroad District failed to net any suspects. “It’s still an ongoing investigation, but we’re confident we have the right guy,” APD Detective Brent Jensen said. Police will conduct additional witness interviews and have sent more lab work to the Oregon State Police crime lab for testing prior to Patchell’s trial. No trial date has been set. Patchell was arrested in May for possessing methamphetamine and in connection with a burglary at Southern Oregon Pawn.
