File photo | Ashland Daily Tidings The University of California-Davis wrestling team used quick-strike offense at the lighter weights en route to a 31-12 nonconference victory over Southern Oregon University at McNeal Pavilion Friday night. The Pac-10 Conference Aggies (7-8) snapped SOU’s eight-dual McNeal win streak spanning three seasons and handed the NAIA Raiders (13-5) their most lopsided home setback since 1997 by storming to an insurmountable 25-6 lead after six bouts, including pins in the 141, 149 and 165 clashes. UCD, which forfeit to Raider freshman Barry Johnson at 133 pounds, won seven of the nine contested weight classes to improve to 6-1 against SOU since its late-1990s move to NCAA Div. I status. “That was an impressive team we wrestled tonight,” Raider coach Mike Ritchey said. “They’re a legitimate, well-coached Division I program. They showed us a couple of weaknesses we need to address before (the NAIA regional tournament) next week.” Seniors David O’Brien and Rick Story highlighted Southern’s efforts. Ranked sixth at 174 pounds, O’Brien returned to intercollegiate action after nearly a month off due to injury by posting an 8-7 come-from-behind win over freshman Dustin Noack. The two-time All-American trailed 2-1 early but pulled away from a 6-6 deadlock after two periods with an authoritative single-leg takedown coupled with smart defense in the final two minutes for his 19th season win. Men’s Basketball At La Grande, the Southern Oregon University men’s basketball team kept its Cascade Conference regular-season championship hopes alive with a 67-61 victory Friday night over Eastern Oregon University. The 10th-ranked Raiders (22-5, 11-4 CC) never trailed in cracking the fifth-place Mountaineers (14-10, 8-8) for the 11th straight encounter since 2001 thanks in part to a game-high 18 points on 8-for-12 shooting by senior wing RaShawn McAllister. Women’s Basketball At La Grande, the Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team fought off a second-half Southern Oregon University surge by scoring 14 of the final 16 points in a 58-42 Cascade Conference triumph Friday night. After trailing by 11 early in the second period, the ninth-place Raiders (11-15, 4-11 CC) pulled within four, 44-40, on a Kasi Backer jumper with 3:11 remaining, but couldn’t finish. But the Mountaineers (18-7, 12-4) went on to register their sixth straight win against their sister school since 2003.
