The first one, the Table Rock Sentinel, started in 1855. In 1859, it became the Oregon Sentinel, but because of its sympathies with the Democratic Party, only lasted until 1861. Next came the Southern Oregon Gazette, but its editorials were so “anti-the-government-in-power” that the U.S. Mail soon refused to deliver it. It died from lack of circulation. The next newspaper was the Civilian, with a milder Democratic slant. However, readers were so disgusted with its editors that the paper was unpopular from the start, and also failed. In 1863 the Civilian got a new owner and name, the Intelligencer, but closed because it didn't make any money. The Oregon Reporter of 1865 failed within a year. It resurfaced as the Southern Oregon Press in 1867, but lasted only a few months. Its successor, the Reveille (REV-a-lee) fared no better. The Democratic News of 1869 was progressing nicely until its plant was destroyed in the fire of 1872. It rose again as The Democratic Times, which lasted to the early 1900s, when it merged with the Southern Oregonian. Today, the Jacksonville Review carries on the tradition and, hopefully, will last a little longer than its predecessors.
