December 18. 2014 12:01AM Best Bets: Dec. 18-24 'A Christmas Carol: The Musical' Forty-nine Rogue Valley students of Craterian Performances' teen theater program will perform this version of the holiday story with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and book by Mike Ockrent and Ahrens that retells the story of a Victorian-era miser who is taken on a journey of self-redemption, courtesy of the ghost of his deceased business partner, Jacob Marley, and several other Christmas apparitions. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Dec. 18-19, and 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at the Craterian Theater, 23 S. Central Ave., Medford. Tickets cost $20, $10 for ages 18 and younger, and can be purchased at the box office, 16 S. Bartlett St., online at craterian.org or by calling 541-779-3000. Southern Oregon Concert Band The community band, directed by Martin Behnke, will present "Faces of the Holiday Season," its annual holiday concert featuring handbell quartet Tintinnabulation and The Rogue Trombones, at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, at Central Medford High School, 815 S. Oakdale Ave. The festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. in the school's lobby with Ashland Brass and The Magic Flutes. The main program will include Mannheim Steamroller's "Fanfare" and "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," Vince Guaraldi's "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and selections from "The Nutcracker." Also look for traditional carols, selections from "Messiah," Irving Berlin's "White Christmas," and more. A reception will follow the concert. Admission is $5; $10 for a family. Call 541-708-0365. 'Flamenco Nights Gypsy Fire': Flamenco guitarists Robert Boyd and Grant Ruiz, percussionist Terry Longshore and dancer Elena Villa will perform traditional flamenco music and dance from the south of Spain and original instrumentals by Boyd from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, at Paschal Winery, 1122 Suncrest Road, Talent. Ice Rink Celebration Celebrate the grand opening of the Ashland Rotary Centennial Ice Rink from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at the rink, 95 Winburn Way, across from Lithia Park. Events include open skating with DJ music, a figure skating performance at 7:30 p.m., visits with Chilly the Snowman and ice sculpting. Skating is $3 and free for kids ages 5 and under. Skate rentals are $2.50. Bad Film Society Celebrate Bad Film Society's kooky Winter Solstice Santa Extravaganza at 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, in the basement of the Ashland Elks building. Use the entrance on Will Dodge Way, the alley between East Main Street and Lithia Way and First and Second streets, Ashland. The feature will be a schlocky 1964 holiday staple, "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians." Filled with bad acting, props and sets, Martians kidnap Santa and force him to make toys. Will Santa make it back to Earth and his elves in time for Christmas? Two dark and hilarious Finnish short films about domesticating feral Santas also will be shown. Bring a potluck dish to share and a wrapped, totally bad present for a gift exchange. Admission is a donation of $4 to benefit the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. See www.badfilmsociety.org. Southern Oregon Repertory Singers The 60-voice choir, directed by Paul French, will present “The Holly and the Ivy," a program of carols from around the world, with performances set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, in the Music Recital Hall on the Southern Oregon University campus, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. The concerts will feature traditional and new compositions from England, Ireland, France, Africa and America. Look for "Silent Night" sung in Spanish, "Ave Maris Stella" by U.S. composer Mark Thomas, Fredrik Sixten's "There Is No Rose" and more. The singers will be accompanied by winds, harp, piano, organ, and a consort of viols. The choir will be joined by the North Medford High School Choir for several selections. Free preconcert lectures will be offered one hour before each concert. Tickets cost $22, $25 or $29, $5 for students, and can be purchased at Music Coop and Paddington Station.
