Our activities vary, but we are both devoted to services that sustain the physical and emotional health of community members — children, adults and families. This summer, we have another thing in common: our tremendous gratitude for the support we have received from the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation. In June, Cow Creek awarded $5,000 to the Ashland Family YMCA to provide youth scholarships to summer camps and financial assistance to families in need. Another $5,000 went to Ashland Emergency Food Bank to support our food purchase program, which allows the agency to buy fresh food, including milk and eggs, to supplement the nonperishable items on our shelves. Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation’s mission — to offer assistance in youth education, strengthen youth and family, provide positive youth development and add to the quality of life for people in southwestern Oregon — seeds hope and compassion. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the foundation for its tireless efforts to provide a hand-up to children, families and community across the Cow Creek homeland. Lisa Molnar, Ashland Family YMCA Pam Marsh, Ashland Emergency Food Bank Kiwanis missing flags As most of you know, the Kiwanis Club of Ashland sponsors a flag program each year whereby American flags are placed on national holidays at many business locations throughout Ashland. One of these holidays was on Independence Day, July 4th. Additional flags are placed down the center of Siskiyou Boulevard. Our flag program is a major fundraising activity that helps Ashland Kiwanis support its many programs for the youth and others in the community. When retrieving the flags at the end of July 4 from their many locations, we discovered that four flags were missing or lost. These flags cost us between $35 and $40 each. For us to buy more flags to replace the lost or stolen flags means less money available to serve our community programs. If you know where one of our flags resides or is being used, please call Russ Chadick at 541-482-0431. We will make arrangements to pick up the flags. Ron Parker Ashland Kiwanis Club Taking on climate change I feel more hopeful than ever that our Congress is on the path to doing something meaningful to address climate change. I recently returned from Washington, D.C., where more than 800 Citizens' Climate Lobby volunteers engaged members of Congress in constructive dialog toward a revenue-neutral carbon fee and dividend solution. This is the second time I’ve gone to Capitol Hill with CCL, and this year’s meetings were decidedly different. Overall, House and Senate members and staff were better informed, very engaged in talking about solutions, and expressed the importance of taking action soon. CCL’s legislative proposal recognizes that our country needs a bipartisan path to lower greenhouse gas emissions. I am encouraged by reports coming in from our over 500 congressional office meetings last week that indicate a narrowing divide between Republicans and Democrats on the issue of climate change and solutions. Now I am hoping for some Republican climate heroes to step up and take the lead on climate legislation soon. May they follow in the footsteps of predecessors such as Teddy Roosevelt (land conservation), Richard Nixon (Clean Air Act) and Ronald Reagan (Montreal Protocol), who we can thank today for their environmental stewardship. Ultimately, may this Congress choose to be on the right side of history and take action soon. Please support our elected officials on the path to getting there.
