Through programs which build self-esteem, confidence, and leadership skills, we hope to continue the positive impact on the lives of children in our community. The Y offers youth sports teams, a safe place to play basketball, swim, or learn gymnastics. The Ashland YMCA provides quality day care and after school activities, we certify life guards, and offer scuba instruction and certifications, teaching team and life skills. Currently, more than 1,400 of our area kids participate in soccer teams, basketball, volleyball, flag football, and pee wee sports. Two hundred kids learn water skills each month and more than 1,700 are involved in our summer camp activities. In addition, the Y runs the largest child development center in the area. The Y partners with the surrounding schools to fill in the gaps for child care when days are cut from the school year. Partnering with Head Start, the Y offers financial assistance to whole families to participate in our programs where there is need. And the list goes on. Today, one in four kids in Ashland lives in poverty. As government programs are cut and the needs of lower income families grows, the Ashland Family YMCA continues to fill the gap of growing needs in our community. In 2003 alone, the Y awarded over $180,000 in scholarships to local kids and needy families. The YMCA does NOT receive any public tax money for the services it provides. The Ashland Family YMCA has been serving the youth of Ashland for more than 100 years. Once a year, the YMCA conducts a Scholarship Campaign for Kids and asks for your help. This years campaign begins on April 21. All of the money raised by the Campaign for Kids goes to scholarships. Eighty percent of the contributions collected go directly to our youth programs, with the remaining 20 percent benefiting low-income seniors and others in the community needing help with membership and participation fees. Your contribution stays in Ashland. Most importantly the Y allows every child who wishes, an opportunity to participate in youth sports teams. No child is ever turned away because of inability to pay. Your donations can make a major difference in the lives of the children in our community.
