Two of these are due to events beyond the paper’s control. Columnist Robert Asghar has discontinued his commentary effective this week, and he is being replaced by Froma Harrop. Her biography on the Creator’s Syndicate Web site reads, in part: “Froma Harrop is an independent and fearless voice for the thinking reader. Her twice-weekly column offers opinions on everything from foreign policy to taxation to whether Girl Scouts should sell their own cookies — and they are usually delivered with a strong dose of humor. “Although she mixes up her subject matter, Harrop maintains especially strong interests in health care, the environment and the lives of women. Her politics often reflect the frustrations of the swing voter. The other unforeseen change comes on the comics page, as the creator of “Boondocks” is taking a long-term sabbatical. In the interim, “Stone Soup” by Jan Eliot will run in its place. The Tidings welcomes input on the change, and will take it into account when Aaron McGruder returns to his strip. Universal Press Syndicate has this to say about Eliot’s comic: “Jan Eliot began cartooning as a form of self-defense when she was a single mom trying to raise two daughters, stay fully employed, pay the bills and still have a little fun once in a while. She discovered that cartooning gave her the opportunity to laugh at adversity, vent her frustrations and find humor in being short of money, short of time and short of patience. Not coincidentally, her original comic strip was called ‘Patience and Sarah’ and featured a single mom (Patience) and her daughter. It ran for five years in 10 weekly and monthly papers. “In 1995, under the new name of ‘Stone Soup,’ Jan’s comic strip was nationally syndicated... ‘Stone Soup’ focuses on human relationships and the modern family. As one newspaper described it, the strip ‘pursues the humor in life, parenting and even the friends we can’t choose — relatives.’” The third change being made is the replacement of Susan Estrich on Friday’s editorial page. Over the past few months, the Tidings editorial board came to the conclusion that her column had veered into a narrow and self-centered path that no longer served a majority of readers. Those interested in continuing to read her column can do so on the Web at www.creators.com. Estrich will remain a backup commentator taking the place of Bill O’Reilly. Her regular slot will now be filled by Alexander Cockburn: “Born and raised in Ireland, Alexander Cockburn has lived and worked in America since 1973. He has established a reputation as one of the foremost reporters and commentators of the left by writing newspaper and magazine columns for the past decade. Cockburn’s areas of interest include the American political scene, economics, the environment, labor issues and international policy. “In 1987, Cockburn authored a highly successful collection of essays, some autobiographical, entitled Corruptions of Empire, for which he was called ‘the most gifted polemicist now writing in English’ by the Times Literary Supplement. His diary of the late 1980s and early 1990s, ‘The Golden Age Is In Us,’ drew enthusiastic reviews from many sources, such as The New York Times The editorial board believes the net result of these changes should maintain the balance of the political spectrum on the editorial page. Reader feedback is always encouraged. Letters intended for publication, subject to standard guidelines, should be sent to [email protected], while those simply wishing to give the editorial board input should be sent to [email protected]. The Tidings reviews its syndicated content roughly twice a year.
