Grier Gatlin indicated he is pursuing other professional opportunities after a seven-year stint as SOU’s head cross country coach and six seasons as assistant track and field coach. “I’ve reached a point in my life that it’s time for me to move on to other things,” Gatlin said. “(Coaching the Raiders) was a good experience, and I really enjoyed working at SOU.” The 1996 SOU graduate and former 5,000-meter collegiate all-star racer coached the Raider cross country teams to new heights. Competing in what is regarded as the nation’s toughest region, Southern Oregon’s men’s harrier squad won the school’s first Cascade Conference and NAIA Region I titles in 2004 and successfully defended the league crown last fall en route to a 10th-place national meet finish —the school’s best since 1989. The Raider men achieved an all-time program-best No. 3 rating in the 2005 NAIA preseason poll. His 2000 women’s cross country team earned its highest conference finish (second) and loftiest national ranking (17th) in seven years. The five-time league or regional coach-of-the-year honoree guided six NAIA All-American performers, including the SOU’s first national-placing 4x800 track relay team and first 1,500-meter luminary (Trevor Palmer).
