PREP ROUNDUP Grizz boys edge North Medford by two strokes in SOC district finals Staff and wire reports GRANTS PASS — Grants Pass’ Andy Maphet won the conference individual title by five strokes over teammate Calen Nicholson and the Cavemen triumphed as both the Southern Oregon Conference regular-season and tournament champions Tuesday at the Grants Pass Golf Club. Ashland, which edged North Medford by two strokes in the conference tournament, receives the league’s No. 2 bid to the state tournament May 15-16 at the OGA Golf Course at Woodburn. The Grizzlies did it with consistency, as their top four golfers each shot between 80 and 86 for a team score of 332. Austin Harfst shot an 80, Ben Wright an 82, Will Murphy an 84 and Galen Camp an 86 for Ashland. North Medford’s Brad Johnson and John Clarke finished among the top five individuals to qualify for state. Girls Golf At Medford, North Medford rolled through the Southern Oregon Conference district tournament, shooting a combined 343 Tuesday to clinch the league title at Rogue Valley Country Club. Ashland, led by Lauren Dow’s 101, finished fifth in the final league standings. Prep Track and Field Jaxon Williams and Ryan Pittman each won two events but the Ashland boys still suffered an 81-63 setback to North Medford at Ashland High on Tuesday. The Black Tornado girls were also victorious, 97-48. Williams won both the discus (146 feet, — inches) and the triple jump (37-11), while Pittman finished first in the high jump (6-2) and long jump (20-2). Also for the Ashland boys, Dan Cropper won the 110-meter hurdles (16.37), John Harris won the 300 hurdles (43.56), Tucker Bacon won the 1,500 (4:16.4) and Matt Miner took the 3,000 (9:15.6). In girls action, Ashland’s Natalie Hemphill won both distance events, winning the 1,500 in 4:59.3 and the 3,000 in 11:15.7. Her sister, Aria Hemphill, won the 800 in 2:23.9, and Ashland’s Jordan Kling won the 200 in 27.69. The meet was Ashland’s last home event of the season. The Grizzlies next travel to Eagle Point for the Southern Oregon Conference district meet, May 18 and May 20 at Eagle Point.
