Ecology Center of the Siskiyous conducts its unscientific survey of the trash disposed at Southern Oregon University on Wednesday. Robert Plain | Ashland Daily Tidings ECOS, the Ecology Center of the Siskiyous, conducted its bi-annual solid waste survey to determine just what is being thrown away on campus. Carolynne Bohannon, a senior environmental studies major who headed this semester’s survey, suspected the trash would include a lot of paper cups. Before the trash counting occurred, Bohannon said, “We’re hoping there are less paper cups this year.” Wishful thinking apparently. Bohannon and other students collected 10 bags of garbage, some weighing between 10 and 15 pounds, and then inspected the contents on tables in from of the Stevenson Union on Wednesday afternoon. “We want people to become more aware of what they are throwing away,” Bohannon said. “It’s kind of shocking. People just don’t seem to care.” Bohannon said one student, carrying a used coffee cup, claimed not be a part of the problem because she planned to discard her cup at home. But Bohannon told her, “It all ends up in the same landfill, regardless of where you throw it away. “There are a lot of recycling bins around campus,” she said. “A lot of stuff in the garbage could be recycled. Some people just aren’t aware of what they are doing.” Bohannon said 22 percent of the garbage they surveyed could have been recycled. To help foster the use of reusable cups, the students were also giving away recycled beverage containers to be used in lieu of paper cups.
