May 4, 2006 Seniors ready to launch The Ashland High School senior class is counting the days to graduation. Their parents are counting pennies to throw them a party. This is the prevailing notion that underlines the message in the new Hollywood film “United 93,” which attempts to recreate the heroic actions of a group of ordinary Americans onboard an ill-fated flight on September 11, 2001. But facts don’t lie. People do. There is a reason the U.S. was attacked on 9/11. Let's explore some of the facts ... CASE IN POINT (OPED) Updated Mondays: — Case In Point : United 93 artfully displays human courage Some weeks back, when the first trailers arrived previewing “United 93,” reactions ran the gamut. Because Hollywood carries so much baggage, it was understandable that some might assume the film would exploit a day that has taken on a dark and profound solemnity, a day of such unyielding pain and loss that there would simply be no way that filmmakers could capture, with respect and grace, its wrenching impact. Three are married, more or less happily we assume. One is single and feels the weight of her solitary life as if it were a stone bearing down on her. Shakespeare benefit slated for SOU’s Hannon Library the Friends of Hannon Library Annual Benefit Event will feature an English tea, lecture by Shakespeare scholar Yu Jin Ko, Elizabethan music, and exhibit of rare Shakespearean works. Experience Shakespeare will begin at 4 p.m. on Monday in the Meese Meeting Room (Library 305). LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT MOVIES: Reviews & current listings Duncan has plenty of gems to share at program Wednesday “I’d heard at church that the kingdom of heaven is within us and thought, Yeah, sure. But the first time I walked up a trout stream, fly in hand, I didn’t feel I was ‘outside’ at all: I was traveling further and further in.” So says David James Duncan, author of the novel “The River Why.” Perhaps you’re reading it right now, having accepted the invitation of our county to be part of our “Jackson County Reads” program. I hope so. Duncan’s prose is worth the effort. “I was struck by the suspicion that rivers and mountains are myself turned inside out,” he wrote. Bingo.
