For starters, being the oldest troop in the state, founded just five years after the Boy Scouts of America was established in Washington, D.C., with President William Howard Taft as honorary leader and former President Teddy Roosevelt as honorary vice president and Chief Scout Citizen. From that long-ago beginning in 1915 as Troop 1, the troop later merged with Troop 2 and was renamed Troop 112. Scouting has taught generations of boys camping and survival skills, as well as the virtues of self-reliance, teamwork, leadership and service. Along the way, local Scouts have benefited the community through annual events such as Christmas tree collection and individual community projects completed by candidates for Eagle Scout, the organization's highest rank. Last week, the national Scouting organization added another virtue: Inclusion. The national  executive committee approved a resolution allowing individual troops to end the organization's ban on gay leaders. Scouting officially admitted gay scouts in 2013. The resolution, expected to be ratified July 27, leaves it up to local troops to allow or not allow gay leaders. Many troops are sponsored by religious organizations, which may object. But the step, though small, is in the right direction.
