- Subscribe - Contact Us - Rate Card - Place an Ad Archives Revels Classifieds Real Estate Menu Guide Wedding Weather Subscribe Contact Us May 10, 2005 Sohl nets national honor Ashland High senior awarded $2,500 and named as National Merit Scholar By Jennifer Squires Ashland Daily Tidings Sohl Ashland High senior Rachel Sohl has been named a National Merit Scholar and earned a $2,500 college scholarship. “It’s a little more than a drop in the bucket,” Sohl said, who will attend Brown University in the fall to study history or anthropology linguistics. “[The award is] as valuable for the honor of it as the money.” In early April, Sohl found out she had been selected as one of 8,200 National Merit Scholars in the country. The award is based on scores from the Pre-Standardized Achievement Test, which students take once during the junior year of high school, plus an application, short essay and transcript. About 1.2 million students take the PSAT annually. “It’s an incredible achievement,” Ashland High principal Jeff Schlecht said. “Having a scholar is so rare.” Sohl knew she was in the running for the honor because the organization informed her at the beginning of the school year she had been chosen as a semifinalist, the second level of National Merit honors. Most semifinalists become finalists and about half are named scholars. “She can be a role model for inspiring kids,” Schlecht said. “If you’ve got goals and you’ve got dreams they can happen it just takes a little self-discipline and paying attention.” Sohl didn’t study for the PSAT, though she took a practice test as a sophomore and knew if she scored well the next year, she had the potential to become a National Merit Scholar. She scored 233 out of 240 on the PSAT, which correlates to 1550 on the SAT. Sohl, who is the student body co-president, co-captain of the Brain Bowl team and the speech and debate team, tallied 1540 on the real SAT, 780 on the new SAT writing section, 800 on the chemistry SAT and 790 on the U.S. History SAT. Sohl is also involved in rugby, the outrigger canoe team, the mock trial team, the scavenger hunt team, the National Honor Society and the French club. She will not be the valedictorian or salutatorian of her class, but Sohl graduates in June with a grade-point average higher than 3.9 and receive honors for her oustanding academic performance.
