Bicyclist seriously injured By Jennifer Nitson Ashland Daily Tidings An Ashland man was in critical condition today after suffering extensive injuries in a bicycle accident. At about 12:40 p.m. Sunday, Michael Magg, 39, was struck by a 1997 Toyota Corolla in the westbound lane of Highway 66, near milepost 5.25 in the Emigrant Lake area. He was transported by a Mercy Flights helicopter to Rogue Valley Medical Center. According to State Trooper Bill Matson, who was at the scene of the accident, both the vehicle and the bicycle were traveling westbound when Magg apparently turned to check traffic behind him and veered in front of the car. Magg's Trek 2300 road bike was struck broadside. The collision knocked Magg onto the car's windshield before he landed on the shoulder of the eastbound lane. Though Magg was unable to comment on the cause of the accident, the damage to the bicycle is consistent with the car driver's explanation. "It appears from the damage that he was in fact broadside when struck," Matson said. "If he had been struck from behind, the damage would have hit the rear wheel." The driver of the vehicle, an 18-year-old woman, suffered only minor cuts to her hand and was released at the scene. She is not considered at fault for the accident. "There are no driver factors that we can figure in this particular case," Matson said. Jackson County Fire District No. 5 and Oregon State Police responded to the accident.
