SOU harriers run away with team title By JENNIFER SQUIRES Ashland Daily Tidings The Southern Oregon University women's cross country team brought top honors home from the six-team Bear Fete Invitational on Saturday at St. Paul. The 19th-ranked Raider women finished 1, 2, 6, 9 and 11 in the 4,000-meter event to slip past runner-up Linfield College 29-44. Sophomore Brynn Cogdill paced the Raiders with her 14:51.87 first-place performance. SOU sophomore Hadley Roe finished second in 15:04.47. "Brynn - for her and Hadley - it looked like a nice little stroll through the park," said fifth-year Raider head coach Grier Gatlin. Gatlin wished the competition would have been stiffer on the women's side. Southern won without the help of junior Kierra Bernales, the No. 3 runner from last year's squad. Twin sisters Emily and Alanna Steinert were the Raiders' third and fourth runners. Freshman Mallory Gordon rounded out the SOU scorers with her 11th place finish in her collegiate debut. The Raider men finished third with 78 points, behind Willamette University (31) and host George Fox University (44). Sophomore Ryan Pfeil came in seventh, clocking 21:07.75 over the 4-mile course to lead Southern's 7-14-17-19-21 showing. Redshirt-senior Sean Peterson competed unattached and finish second overall in 20:35.74, nine seconds behind winner Nick Symonds of Willamette. The Raiders (3-5, 2-1 CCC), losers of five straight, took advantage of an own goal and a penalty kick in winning for the first time at Albertson. Jeannelle Thompson opened the scoring in the eighth minute, chipping a ball over the head of Coyote keeper Danielle Dorsch from 25 yards out. The Raiders would bang two shots off the crossbar, but Marissa Gillingham followed with a drive inside the left post in the 22nd minute to put Southern up 2-0.
